Howdy,
Glad I found this forum. I have been a fan of the 1911 since I was in the navy 1960-1968. I entered on duty (EOD) into the U.S. Border Patrol in January 1969. At that time a 1911 could be authorized by a Sector Chief, but in ~1972 there was a shooting in Buffalo where a subject drew an ice pick on two Border Patrol Plain Clothes Agents who had just identified themselves. Subject went after the two Agents. (One Agent was armed with an issue S&W Model-49 (5 shot .38 Special) and the other with a S&W Model-39 9mm. Both were using ball ammo and both emptied their guns into the subject. Someone who did not like semi-automatics in our Central Office was able to convince the Chief of the Patrol that semi-autos were bad and they were banned. (Makes no sense obviously)

I served as an Academy Firearms Instructor from 1877 - 1987. The quarterly qualification scores were all sent to the Academy and filed by me for each USBP sector. Early on I noticed that one supervisor in AZ had a handgun with a Series Seventy serial number. I had to smile because no one had caught on or challenged him carrying a 1911. :)
