Depends on a long list of reasons, not all are defendable but it definitely makes a big hole and fun to shoot and reload for,but with today’s advances in bullet design even a 22 mag can be considered a deterrent.

The need to carry a ugly pistol just to have the ability toshoot someone 12 to 16 times just raises the aftermath issues, analyze it however you want

Only carry a weapon you're accurate with and comfortable with because caliber does not matter if you cant hit the target

So you are saying that if I am forced to shoot someone once w/ a gun that holds 8-rounds, I have less civil exposure than if I shot someone once w/ a gun that held 16-founds?

    No
Thats funny you could ask that ,but out of respect for a great forum of gentlemen,I’ll try again and expand on my view. For me self defense means, not trying to make the aftermath as costly and tough to beat even cops can’t get out of shooting someone 10 times ,If i need to carry extra mags speed loaders or buy aand carry a pistol that is fat and ugly 365 days a yr. Life is too short for that.If I am expecting a shootout I’ll stay home and reload.

I've got plenty of forty-fives, and plenty of nines. They're both pretty good choices, for different reasons!

My ideal choice? .40S&W. Combines most of the positive ballistic benefits of .45acp (energy and expansion diameter) and 9mm (penetration) combined with excellent barrier/bone penetration with minimal, if any, deflection. Generally speaking, you can expect good expansion diameter, excellent barrier penetration without deflection, and deep tissue penetration with .40S&W.

Add in lighter recoil than .45acp. And then, .40S&W brings nearly the same capacity of 9mm. So... that's a really sweet symphony of defensive capability right there!

Terminal ballistics are important AND, so is capacity! .40S&W is the winner in combining these attributes.

So if you are in a shoot out with a pistol carry only a lesser capacity pistol. BUT if you are expecting a shoot out show up with a long gun and 30 round magazines. (scratches head)

Did you know that as a reloader, using LongShot powder, you can boost .40S&W velocities into 10mm territory, while staying below SAMMI maximum pressures for .40S&W?

Yes, you can make safe 10mm "woods loads" with .40S&W.

    10mm Factory examples:
Hornady 180 gr. XTP factory load G20SF TESTED: 1160 fps
Winchester 175 gr. STHP factory load TESTED: 1170 fps

    .40S&W Hand load:
    180 gr. XTP bullet over 7.7 gr Longshot - pressure 30,870 vs. SAAMI max of 35,000, = 1127 fps / 203 PF

Don't take my word for it - confirm that on Hodgdon's website!

Well, you will get many opinions and most are valid. I work in a hospital and I live out West and actually myself and most of the people I am around carry guns. Day in and day out. One lady I work with carries a pocket 9mm, another lady a pocket 40. A few gents when surveyed carry 9mm and more than a few 45 ACP. None of us are under any false impression that one well placed shot would not do the job, yet all of us seem to carry a gun, more than one magazine or a backup gun. By myself, often just a J frame. Family ups the ante and I carry the J frame as BUG and an Officers LW in 45 ACP. Soon I will be trying 38 Super/9mm combo, but I almost half expect that I will go back to my original set up. Should the anarchists get elected...2 45 ACP in an Andrews Urban Safari.
