A quest… 9mm Colt

I’m on a quest. A quest to make this dam 9mm Colt Combat Commander reliable with jhp carry ammo. Any jhp, I really don’t care what kind at this point. Many of you would have found a way to relieve yourself of the headache by now, but this thing is so smooth shootin, accurate and fun with fmj. In any case I’m not in sell mode, probably won’t ever be.

My love/hate relationship with this particular pistol looks like a sine wave, and if you ever see me post down on Colts or 1911s, it’s because of this one. I want to be able to carry the thing, which I like to do with everything I have. I’d rather not do it with fmj in it, although I know people did exactly that for many years.

I’ve read a few threads in here re feeding issues, and The 1911 Whisperer told me one last thing to try before bringing it to him.

This all just tickles the sht out of me. I shot 1911s with my dad over the years but never owned one myself until about two years ago. Now I have nine. Hook-Line-Sinker.

Anyway, Big Box for some ammos then off to the range.

If its an all factory colt and you are having feeding issues then swapping out to a Kart ramped barrel may be your solution. Ramped vs Unramped is up there with the caliber debates but personally I dont see why anyone is manufacturing a 1911 with an unramped 9mm barrel these days.

Second this!!
Also, I’d love to send a colt 9mm to either NH or Wilson. That’ll make it reliable

Ramped barrel for sure, but that includes milling the frame to accept it

WAA, have you tried different magazines? I've had good luck with the Wilson Combat offerings in 9mm. But to be honest, I own 9mm magazines by Brown, McCormick, and CheckMate. If it were me, I'd buy at least 500 rounds of a JHP and then try different magazines. Or choose a magazine and try different JHP's. I have a Colt Lightweight Commander chambered in 9mm and haven't had any problems with either 124 Gold Dot or HST JHP's when using a Wilson magazine. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress.

9mm 1911's definitely seem to be more magazine sensitive!

Mine prefer McCormick or Tripp and all but one wont run with Wilson's

Started with some WWB then finished with the HST. 100% run with the HST, even from the Colt mag. I had told The 1911 Whisperer what was happening with Gold Dots, and he said if I wanted factory stuff go compare all of it I could find and try the stuff that was “longest from stem to stern.” I’ll be gd if it didn’t work. No need to polish anything or pay him any money to get it running.

Un-freekin real.

In the 80's my solution to my dual duty (competition and Carry) Colt Super was to have the frame milled for ramped barrels, never had a hiccup after that.

Had a similar issue with JHP. After 500 rounds it broke in and functioned fine.

Round count when I tried the HST was 1000+ of WWB, Underwood and Speer Gold Dots, American Gunner, Critical Duty and Defense, Winchester Defender, I tried it all. I wasn’t going to have it milled or anything, and I was actually getting ready to give up and just make it a range gun.

Might do some more experimenting later, but now I’m just happy I found a winning combo. Going back out today to run a couple more boxes of HST to proof it, then I’ll add this one to my rotation.

After all, it’ll then be “just as reliable as my Glock.” ;)
She’s a beaut, Clark! She’s a beaut!

I can’t remember which run this picture is, it don’t matter it’s operating perfectly.

Callin it macaroni.

I put two boxes of Speer Gold Dots and two boxes of Hornady XTP through the gun today with zero malfunctions. It would seem I was just too impatient. In recognition of that, let me just put up one last pic before I go…
