another lesson learned today.... I've flown with my guns before and always locked my mags with my gun in my checked baggage.....today I was going on a short weekend business trip with a carry-on bag and planned to go to a local range at my destination and rent a 1911 to shoot....so I looked on the TSA site to see if empty magazines were listed as prohibited in carried on baggage....."gun parts" were mentioned but I didn't see anything about empty mags....so I called and the bored sounding woman at the American Airlines site said that gun magazines were fine....so I threw 2 .45 and 2 9mm mags in my bag.....wrong answer....maybe she thought I was talking about American Rifleman or Guns and Ammo magazines.....as I was going thro the TSA inspection station, the Agents went ballistic....you would have thought I had a 155 Howitzer stuck in my bag.....they took me to a room and had me unpack everything and ran explosive patches over my underwear.....finally they let me mail my mags to my home and cleared me to get on the plane.....so, unloaded magazines are "gun parts" and are prohibited....don't know what specifically they are worried about, but the lesson is "don't do it".....

You might attach it to a ball point pen and then have a fully automatic assault rifle :o.o:

Thankfully they let you mail them home. I'm surprised they didn't confiscate them.

The TSA folks were generally polite but didn't seem to understand that empty mags are just pieces of metal....one earnest young man told me very seriously that I might use them to shoot someone after the scanning position....I mentioned that generally that requires a gun, which they had just proved I did not have....didn't seem to make much of an impact on his earnestness.....I'm on their side in all this craziness but don't think they thought this one through very well.....they let me mail them home....guess they don't care about the USPS safety......

I forgot I had cO2 bottles for my paint ball gun in my carry on bag one time.

That didn't go over to well with the TSA when the x-rayed my bag.

Really sorry that happened to you today. Good news! You can buy more mags before you fly back home! I know a guy.

Don't feel too bad, they stopped me in Houston and DC for wearing starched jeans. Those folks are stupid at best. The woman at the little ID counter was holding my TDL and looking at me and then asked what my name was. Like Ron White says "You can't fix stupid".
