I'm curious, has anyone ever had a hard chrome gun rust?
I don’t think that is possible
In the most technical sense, chrome cannot rust.
That being said I have heard of a few instances where a hard chrome gun showed some rust spots on the frame. It was attributed to micro fractures in the finish that develop from the frame flexing during firing.
Hard chrome can be difficult to do right. But when done right, there should not be any rusting unless it were to wear in certain spots and leave the steel exposed.
Yes, chrome plating can and will rust.
Also, foreign material that can collect on the exterior can rust giving the appearance of the gun rusting. I think this is more common with stainless as chrome finishes aren't as porous.
I've bought hard chromed guns that have rust specks in places like the checkering or on the grip safety. A brass brush or brass wool and a little oil makes short work of it.
