Are there any 45acp options that near 10mm performance?

With the recent move to big bear country, I’ve been exploring adding a 10 mm to my collection for hiking in bear country. I do own a Smith and Wesson 329 PD for when I’m hunting. That 44 magnum it sure does the trick.

However, as I’m looking at options for a pistol over a revolver it naturally led me down the 10mm road. But before adding a new blaster in 10mm (I’m actually considering converting a Glock 21 to 10mm with glock 20 barrel and other requires parts). I am curious as to what my ammunition options are to gain performance. I know the buffalo bore offers a 45 super. Do you recommend other particular rounds that will function in a all steel 5 inch 1911 to pick up the speed necessary to stop a fight with an aggressive bear?

I guess what I’m saying is I’m new to hot loads within the 45acp family, what options are out there? And what needs to be considered before popping said hot rod rounds into a factory gun? Buffers, heavier recoil springs? Etc?

Have you looked at underwood ammo? And yes aheavier recoil spring would be appreciated

Yep Underwood unless you go to 45 super or add a 50 GI to your Glock.

It is wholly unadvisable to fire P+ , P++ 45 ACP in Standard .45 ACP Barrels. Max Chamber Pressure for Standard (Mil. Spec.) Barrels is under 20,000psi while P+ Cartridges can produce >50,000psi.

Good Lord I get tired of posting this comment but-----Recoil Spring AND Mainspring! They are a system!

I am a 10mm guy for a reason... No the full power 10mm will spank the old girl every time. When I carry around things that will eat me or hurt me --- NOT shoot me. The 10mm or a 454.

Sorry for the short answer just got back from driving to the ranch in NM yesterday early am and got back home a few hours ago. A little tired 1100 miles.

I'll probably get lit up for saying this, but there are better launchers for HOT .45 rounds than the 1911.
Think HK 45 or HK USP 45. They were designed around a buffer system, and polymer frames DO flex and absorb recoil. The triggers suck, and they are ugly as Hell, and HK lovers are obnoxious dorks, but these pistols are tough.

A more important question is, can YOU shoot?

Plus you won’t mind as much if the bear eats that pistol:jawdrop: after you hopefully escape and run away like a little girl!

Look into the 460 Rowland a lot cheaper than a new blaster

I used to live in bear country (Alaska). Living there, you always wanted to bring enough gun. A pistol or revolver is normally looked upon as a weapon of last resort. Not ideal, but better than nothing. Pictured below is a viable .45 option in a compact package. JM marked Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 by Wild West Guns. Loaded with Garrett Hammerheads, it is good for bear, elephant, rhino or whatever else walks the earth. Carry your revolver/pistol as a back up. If you happen to live in the Great State of Alaska, stop by WWG in Anchorage. Tell Jim West that Jim Hill sent you. Best, SRTCOP

There are commercial barrels that handle +P and++P fine. I dropped a storm lake into a GI 1911A1 just to see how it does and recreated a load I developed in 1980 which is basically ++P for a specific use (it was used once by a motor officer friend of mine on another dept).

Back in the 70s during IPSC, it wasn't unusual to see someone fire off a double charged round. I can break it down by powder with 231 being the most forgiving and it only cost a pair of grips and a magazine out of a Series 70 with both Colt barrels and BarSto when Irv Sr was still around.

I'd ask the company that built the barrel and pistol first.

Sorry I couldn't resist (see below)

I live with Cougars, Bobcats, Coyotes, Black Bears, and misc critters, only thing that bothers me is Copperheads since i was raised around rattlers. Working in the yard, I carry snake shot in my Viper, otherwise it's a 1911

Roger. I sent my Series 70 SS Colt to Karl Lippard in CO Springs for modifications with a 80,000psi Barrel, Trigger Group Mod, and a his T-1 Slide Mod. for improved accuracy, extended range and P+ capability. I love it!
