Well, I got my Ed Brown Kobra that I bought off this forum. It had a few minor marks on the slide so I decided to scuff it up to look like the "smoked nitride" finish all over the forum! I knew going into it that worse case is I send it to GI or Nighthawk to coat

So.. The Ed Brown G4 finish is EXTREMELY SOFT!! It literally wiped off with just 3 or 4 swipes with a scratch pad with barely any pressure! At that point I had to do it all like that to match. It turned out "battle worn" lol

Not “into” that look but it match’s others that I’ve seen fairly well but how will you keep it from just continuing to wear off?

There won't be any way for me to stop it. I'll run it like this for now, then probably send it to GI or Nighthawk to get coated.

I think you have to grind it up before you smoke it buddy ;)

It looks just like the “battleworn” look people pay a lot of money for. What’s your plan now?

Frankly, I like it and would leave it that way were it me! As long as it stays oiled, it'll just get better looking IMHO.:D I'm not that into pretty guns.

Actually...I kinda like it!...Hmmm...not kinda....I like it! Looks pretty cool! I'd keep it that way until you tire of it, then send it out.

    Have fun with it!

I actually think it looks pretty cool, though this obviously shows the difference between NH nitride and whatever Ed Brown uses!

I give both of you a lot of credit for taking a scotchbrite pad to your $2k+ guns! I get it, worst case scenario you have them re-coated, but I still think it takes some balls!

The more I look at it the more I like it....

Honestly, that G4 Brown finish is junk, IMHO. I field stripped my CCO like 3x's and the finish was worn off the end of the slide-release just from the reassembly process.

Send it to NH for a DLC treatment, that snake would look bad ass ;)

I would sit in the "failed" camp on this one.
    No blending, no shadows, uneven.
But I applaud your effort. I have read on the interwebs that paint does not affect performance...

That takes a lot of guts to do that and even more guts to post it on a 1911 forum.

Not really my taste, but I think it turned out pretty cool. If you’re happy with it, keep it!

I wonder if you put a good coat of Renaissance Wax on it, if it would help keep it from wearing further? I know the manufacturer claims it will “enhance the weather resistance“. I use it on a S&W m36 and it really enhances the bluing on it. Then again it gets very little use now days.

I think you were supposed to burnish with an OLD potato sack!!!!

That's how they do it at NHC.
