Could someone explain to me what a "bow tie plug" is? I've read several articles on NH pistols and see bow tie plug referred to a lot but when I researched it I never found the answer. I'd appreciate it if someone could explain. Thank you,

EB97D085-BB0F-493A-BB5D-C99E52C3B0CA.jpeg Google 1911 Bow tie cut.
It’s to relieve an area of the frame for the barrel lugs. The upper part of the barrel lug should only contact the frame reducing the potential of shearing off the barrel lugs on recoil.

You saying a bow tie plug and a VIS relief are the same thing?

I never heard of bow tie plug. I thought maybe the OP misspelled or autocorrect.

I haven’t either so that’s why I asked. Just figured it was a term I’d never heard

Its a supported reverse plug with I guess what they are calling a bow tie. It fills in the gap on a bull barrel between the spring plug and the barrel like photo above.
This is my guess anyway have never heard it called a Bow tie plug.
The VIS bow tie is pictured in first post.

The extra material is where the name comes from. Piss poor photoshop drawing on the pic

@Bender is correct. With a normal reverse plug that is round there is a gap left between the barre and the plug that is shaped like a bow tie. The bow tie plug has extra material on this area to fill in the gap for a cleaner look. Here are photos of each to show the difference. [IMG][IMG]

Very helpful @Bender and rep. I would never have guessed it but the pictures we’re really helpful. That’s why I love this place. So many smart people who are helpful! Doesn’t do anyone any good if you’re smart but won’t help others. Outstanding indeed! Learned something else about guns today. Thanks guys!

I had no idea what that was called. Thanks for the easy to understand explanation, @Bender
Those pics & your drawing made it all crystal clear.

All I can say is that sumbitch is in there fairly snug. Everything about this gun makes for a slower field strip. I do prefer the look with these plugs in place vs what would be open space/gap.
