Carry ammo

we are told that you absolutely must shoot at least 500 rounds of your preferred carry ammo before you can trust your gun. how Is everyone affording that much
for quality carry ammo. At a 1.00 a round or better for quality jhp‘s that’s getting pricey. So do you all suck it and spend the money or do you have another strategy I don’t know about?

I shoot 500 rounds of ammo.
I’ll run a variety of range target and my self defense load
Including mixed magazine of assorted ammos
If I get five hundred of that combo I’m comfortable
Any hiccups I’m not

I do about the same. 500 rounds of various bullet profile reloads. A mixture of fmj, fn-fmj, jhp, and lrn. I'll run a box or two of my preferred carry rounds through it also, usually at the end of a decent range session once the gun is nice and dirty.

500 is ridiculous 🙄

If I run a half-dozen magazines after several hundred rounds of FMJ, without a failure..

I'm convinced

For a semi-auto pistol intended for carry, I shoot 200 to 300 rounds of FMJ ammo to check for infant mortality. I shoot a box or two of several different self-defense ammo rounds to check for ammo sensitivity. I usually have 400 to 500 flawless rounds through it before I carry it.

For a revolver, I put a box of my favorite ammo through it before I carry it.

When I go to the handgun range at the gun club, the first gun shot is the one I am carrying with the self-defense ammo in it. I want to know that it works as carried.

I didn't in the past and don't now. I shoot a box of 50 factory cartridges and then shoot a whole bunch of handloads with hollow point projectiles with the same COAL and similar ogive. Then they get a steady diet of 230gr lead round nose love nuggets

First, you can buy premium JHP for well under a dollar a round (though sometimes not by much).

Second, I t’s likely the 500 rounds was total, not of premium JHP.

I generally go for 150+ of FMJ and at least 50 JHP, before I carry, but of course, I’ll bump those hungers if possible or if there are issues that need sorted.

I'll shoot 2-300 rounds in a 1911 before carrying it. The first 50 or so factory ball, then a mix of my reloads, whatever odd factory I have in house along with 2-3 mags of street ammo (which as often as not in the 45/9mm is good quality ball). Any problems changes the game but 500 rounds is a dream for my checkbook.

consider who is advising using 500 rnds and the industry that is supported by that notion. now consider the reality of vs the possibility vs the.probability. yeah, research methodologies and critical thinking were classes I was required to take in school. things we forget when we get into the debate.

As for.actual testing....I run a box or two and have found what works so.I stick.with it
The Feedway testing is a good start. I don't use a specific round count. I look at the way the gun is made and how the quality of the machining is effecting the functionality. That said a 1911 like a Baer needs more rounds since it is very tight. I usually do a breaking and consider it CCW ready once it is functioning without miss hap. I use a factory 124 or 115 and once it functions without miss hap I use a box of carry ammo. I rotate through each magazine and keep track of the magazines used.

I follow the 500 round minimum (mixed ammo) with usually 100 rounds of HP to see feeding, grouping, etc before I settle.

I stocked up on HST's/Gold Dot's back in 2018/2019. I just do not change carry pistol's so do not have to worry about burning up premium ammo.
This is what I do:

This is a great test. I do the slow feed test alot when building a pistol. I will also go down to the lightest recoil spring I have available to test the slow feed and then back to the spring I plan on using for carry after it passes.
