Jeff Cooper, came up with the "Condition" system to define the state of readiness of the 1911-pattern pistol.
    They are:
Condition 0 - A round is in the chamber, hammer is cocked, and the safety is off.
Condition 1 - Also known as "cocked and locked," means a round is in the chamber, the hammer is cocked, and the manual thumb safety on the side of the frame is applied.
Condition 2 - A round is in the chamber and the hammer is down.
Condition 3 - The chamber is empty and hammer is down with a charged magazine in the gun.
Condition 4 - The chamber is empty, hammer is down and no magazine is in the gun.

Condition 0 seems a little scary to me then again I have found my thumb safety click off a time or too. New holster is on the way to fix that and thankfully I have a great Trigger Finger Memory.

Condition 1 is how I carry, carried when shooting comps and it seems to go along with the 4 rules of engagement/gun fight Cooper wrote.

Condition 2 is something I have thought about but something I could surely see going bad at the worst possible time......Pull said firearm, click safety off, acquire target, pull the trigger and nothing happens....That would mean re training years of training and adding another step when seconds count.

Condition 3 is again another mind set that would need to be learned and remembered at the worst possible time.

Condition 4 would be a complete waste of time with way too many variables...like where the hell is the magazine?

Just my thoughts and it will be interesting to see what others think.

Is ipsc carry conditions a little better to remember? Cond 1 chamber loaded. Cond2 no chamber load with magazine inserted. Cond 3 no chamber load with no magazine inserted. Even though i carry in condition one we still practice shooting in condition 2 iwb concealed. Thats why i prefer the 1911 with front cocking serrations so i could manipulate the slide from ipsc condition 2 iwb concealed appendix carry.

Condition 4 seems hardly worth being on the list...about as useful as having a rock!

    Condition -1.
Cocked, unlocked, drawn and sighted in. I like to walk around the mall that way and screaming at the top of my lungs, "Who let the damned dogs out? Who... Who?????"
Not sure I'm even allowed to own guns after last month's "incident"...

Condition 1 in a thumb-break holster. I just switched to a Bianchi black widow because I'm always on my Harley and felt like I needed the extra retention.
