Hi all- does anyone know of Charlie Mills, custom gunsmith in Salem, Oregon ?
I picked up this beautiful Gold Cup a couple of years ago, then left it sat in my safe whilst I travelled about a bit.
The invoice dates the work to '94, ( two years before I bought my first 1911, Clackamas Kimber ), and I have to say, it's damn impressive. I've seen Wilson , Clark, Jardine and Burns builds from that era, but nothing quite like this... Wondered if any other addicts had information on Mr Mills, ( google yielded nothing), or have other examples of his work ?

I had to bump up the gain on the first 2 pics, it was very hard to light- the bluing is actually pretty flawless...
The trigger is superb and the action really is glassy smooth.
I've not shot it yet...

That’s a really beautiful build. That slide stop is insane! Love it.

Charlie Mills was a close friend of mine and a USPSA shooting buddy. He was a timber faller in Oregon who apprenticed himself to and partnered with master gunsmith Denny Hanel in Sublimity Oregon. He proceeded to build competition and custom 1911s. I own the very first custom he and Denny built for Rob Shepherd, who at the time was our local master class shooter and also a good friend. Sadly, Charlie passed away a couple of years ago.

Above is a crappy photo of my Charlie Mills/Denny Hanel Combat Elite with Wilson comp. It’s stamped “DH” and “CM” on the face of the comp.

wow ! thank you for the info, sorry to learn he passed. That's a piece of Oregon history you have there.
His work and attention to detail on the Gold Cup I have is truly exceptional, I can't wait to get out and shoot it.

Sorry to hear about Charlie. He and Denny did fabulous work. I bought the first .38 Super he built for himself. Wish I still had it.
