Cleaning Kits - Bug Out Bags

458 Views 18 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  DHCARMS
Hi Folks - I have helped a few customers put together bug out bags and similar related items. I am not a die hard prepper per say, but I do believe in being prepared with the essentials. I just wanted to share the below item with you all. I know there are many options, but I really love this pistol cleaning kit by Wilson Combat and have recommended it to many of my customers as a bug out bag addition.

Anyhow, just thought I would share.

Thanks
Dan

That’s pretty expensive for what you get TBH. Can use some $5 fishing lure dividers from Wally World. Brushes/Mops are a couple bucks a piece. Cut up old T-shirt’s make perfect patches

Not sure, I didn't search for one. Probably should have, but I was being lazy.

It is pricey, but IMO, you are paying for convenience in a nice package. When I build bug out bags or instruct my customers on what they should buy, kits are much better for that than giving them a list of 10 things. It's just personal preference.

Very interesting. I’ve got a vehicle BOB as well as a home BOB for my son and I. I’d be interested in how others build there’s that aren’t in dry a$$ desert 🤣

I’ll post tomorrow what I start as a basis for my recommendations to my customers.

Here is a video of Bill Wilson using that kit. I recently bought one myself. What size punch would I add to that kit to push pins out of a 1911?

I would think a 3/32 and a 1/16th would be enough. I have a small set with a hammer I would throw in my bag.

I used to rock the solvent and patches until I used a bore snake - one pull through (from the magwell thru the barrel) and it wipes out the crud - two pulls and it’s shiny! And I have one I’m still using 10 years later. Smaller to pack and no solvent.
Bug bag has an Otis kit in it. Can clean all calibers as well as rifles.

Here is a pic of what I include in mine. What is not shown here is my range of battery types, ammo, 2 guns (1911 and SBR), food, and I have a separate container of clothing and tactical vests. I am still missing a few things, but have mostly what I would need if SHTF.

For me, a gun cleaning kit isn't useful enough that I would include it in a typical BOB. But my emergency prep tends more towards bugging in than out for long-term stuff. My biggest concern in a short-term large-scale emergency is being able to get home to take care of the family versus getting out, and the odds of needing to clean a good quality, well-maintained gun over a shorter timespan is not high enough that I want to take up the space. That's me, my family, and my house, though. Others may have more call for it.

Solid thought……

Always a different view of a subject

I certainly understand that. I may have watched one too many episodes of The Walking Dead. However, I built my bag with the idea of not knowing what would happen, where we would be, and what resources would be available.
