I lived in Fairbanks from 2001 to 2005. The coldest day I experienced was -55 F. The record is -65 F. Typical winter day ranges between -20 and -40 F.

During the winter, a lot of stuff stops working or just doesn't work as well as it should. If you can, you just try to keep mechanical and electrical stuff warm. You do this by providing heat (e.g. eletric battery, oil pan, and block heater for your car), or by keeping it under your parka (e.g. the batteries for your headlamp).

Winter cycling was popular when I was there. We would use special arctic grade bearing grease in our hubs, and dry lube for the chain.

As far as shooting is concerned, I took the easy way out. I practiced during the summer months when it was warm and sunny. Otherwise, my gear stayed inside or under my clothes.
