I had a "mutt" walk into the store yesterday and the deal was too good to pass up.

A poorly re-blued S&W MDL 15-2 for 175.00 !

Mechanically sound, tight lock up,but the blue job was done poorly.
BBL and cylinder came out plum and finish is just about gone on both.

So,I'm considering turning this into a "poor man's Performance Center" combat piece !

Work being considered:

Red insert in the front sight blade.
Bobbed hammer,DAO action job.
Ball detent
Trigger over travel stop
Re-crown bbl.

But the finish is what I can't decide on.
Whether to send it(after the 'smith finishes it) to Chris for a METALOY finish,or just to parkerize it.

Obviously one is less expensive than the other but as I will be keeping this piece as my ONLY custom revolver, and I didn't sink a lot into it to begin with, that is kind of a moot point.

So,what do ya"ll think of the project ?

Great score Dat, the mods sound spot on and IMO would send to Chris and let him do his magic. Don't forget to look at extended cylinder release's from Hogue, I put on all my wheel guns and love em.

Sounds like a fun project. I'd never even consider anything but a ride to Metaloy for a new finish. Then you can spruce er up with good looking new grips.

You know,I do like the hard chrome guns!

And,if it does get hard chromed,Chris' company is the ONLY one I would consider for the job !

That is a great find. Hope you post up some pics - a few "before" just to whet our appetite for now while the work is being done, then some "after" when you get it back.

Back in '97 I had Jack Weigand do his "Tame the Beast" conversion on a Smith 687. Awesome piece of work. I'm looking forward to seeing the work Karl will do for you.

This is gonna be one of a couple "projects"that I have to have Karl work on.Another one is a Baer PII in 9mm that needs some reliability work done as well as new sights and a short trigger for Mrs DAT.

But as soon as the money is in place, off the MDL 15-2 goes!
Still can't make up my mind about finishes though !

Interesting that this should come up again!

After reviewing my finances as well as what a mint shape MDL 15 's or even 67 is going for,I am considering just getting an example of the gun and having a shooter that is collectable as well as a fine looker without going upside down in the piece I have now.
But,having a one off piece is still kind of neat.

Still on the fence on this...................:frusty:.

Rick,
I got this old model 64 for dirt cheap (police trade in) and alway wanted to convert one to a round butt style. So I gutted it and very slowly went to work with a grinder a bucket of water to cool it, and then a file. I also did a bunch of smoothing of th guts and such. Now it is a fantastic shooter and can be polished to a high gloss to look like nickle.
