Well, I started a build with Keith at DW.

I wanted a bobtail 38 super in stainless and while I had originally thought it would be a cobra or executive carry I just couldn't bring myself to give more money to Ed Brown.

I'm doing a DW Classic with a bobtail, a CBOB, and I'm sending DW a bullet proof safety, semi-extended slide-release and 3-hole trigger all from Wilson Combat along with challis slim bushings.

We'll be doing a recessed slide-release, a low profile rear night sight and a tritium front site with the orange ring.

Dan Wesson is also procuring me my choice of grips from VZ, VZ ETC Hyena Brown G10 (thin)

12-14 weeks out and Keith was amazing to work with, patience, and quick to answer all my questions.

    I'm excited :)

I had DW build me a two-tone (stainless frame/duty coat slide) 9mm Valor with adjustable sights this summer. The entire experience in dealing with Keith and DW was fantastic. Delivery was just about 12 weeks. I even got an email from the President of CZ-USA to let me know when the completed pistol had been sent to my FFL. They ship the completed guns from NY to Kansas for final processing and delivery to the customer.
I've put about 350 rounds through it and it functions perfectly. The front sight they installed was just a little short for my style of shooting and Keith gladly offered to swap it out for a taller sight. Great service.
I'm sure you will be pleased with the results when the new piece arrives.

    azguy,
Your build is fabulous! This sounds like the ultimate all steel 1911 carry gun. Any checkering or stippling on the mainspring housing? Can't wait to see it.

I'm one month into waiting for a classic commander bobtail in 38 super. Keith spent a hour back and forth via email while I specced it out. He is very easy to work with and from past experience I can say if there is a problem with a DW he will do whatever necessary to make it right. Congratulations on your build, can't wait to see your review.

12 to 14 weeks isn't bad at all. I'm excited to see the results.

    Sounds like a great build.

I had two good experiences with Keith on 10mm builds in the past
however when I wanted a Specialist or Valor in 38 Superb,
he told me wouldn’t do it because he could not afford the machine shop time and that DW would probably be discontinueing the 38 Super due to poor demand;).

So I bought a blued 9mm Valor, from Buds and a PM38 Super barrel and bushing
from DWs parts shop and had it fit to the Valor.
Problem solved and saved about $400-600 in the process.

It was interesting that I wanted a V bob which he said he couldn't do, but could build what I wanted in a Classic Commander Bobtail. It made no difference to me.

I could of built you one a Valor V-bob frame and slide I have here in my possession. ;) But, yes I have dealt with Keith, Shawn and Andre on a number of occasions, Couldn't ask for a better bunch of folks to deal and do business with.. Congrats, I am sure you'll love it.

He will build you something in which he has parts on hand, however he won’t go out of the way
to do any extra machining or parts procurement to give you what you want.
And then he charges you MSRP plus any little extras he has the parts for to boot.

I guess that is the difference between a true custom/semi custom shop and DW.
Like you supply the parts you want and I’ll charge you extra to put them in the build all while placing his now un-need parts back in stock.

Anyway you will find that the earliest in the year, you can get in an order the better chance that he will have the parts to build you what you want.

I love my Dan Wesson’s, however if I want something special and Keith tries to push me in a direction other than what I want due to parts on hand, it’s time to call up someone else who won’t hesitate to give me what I want.

In for wanting to see the outcome.

Dwe and I have talked a lot about his 38 Super “conversions”. When I get back to work the top of my want to do list is some sort of 38 Super. Since I decided to keep the VBob I have and sell off two of my SIG’s I will want something else to fill the void when I can.

I did not have much luck with the Guardian but I do want an all steel 38 Super, preferably from DW. Good to hear they still do some work.

Any particular reason you went with the CBOB rather than the VBOB?

I’ve gotten 3 custom builds from DW, they’ve all been great.

That’s not been my experience. I supplied a few parts for a custom 9mm CCO, including a Wilson MSH/magwell, and the price reflected that. I would guess that most people would be shocked to learn what I paid for that 9mm CCO (it was less than you could buy a .45 CCO from Bud’s for).

I’ve also seen Keith do custom machining for people with the caveat that it would increase the wait time.

I would have thought after 12 DWs of which two being $2.2k customs that he might have gone that extra mile for me but that was not the case.

He even said he would have to use s PM38 slide with FCS on a Silverback because he didn’t want to machine the top rib for a Silverback or the 38 super breach-face on a 9 mm Specialist slide.

Like I said. I love the two custom DWs I have, but if I decide to do it again, I’ll look elseware.

He said he did not have any Valor frames he could use and suggested the Classic frame.

I just put in an order myself that involves a Classic vs Valor frame. I did ask if waiting any amount of time might change availability and was told Vbob frames are no longer available for custom builds. If memory serves (and enlarged internet photos/my eyes don’t deceive) four lines or so of checkering on the front strap is the only difference.
