First post is a newbie (to changing grip bushings) question...sigh... be gentle. In reading old threads on DW bushings I get the impression they’re the slim type and not staked. Is that correct? All I have to check is my Guardian and that is slim bushings, of course, because it’s got slim grips. I’ve got very small hands and prefer thin grips and short triggers. I’m particularly interested in this info on the Valor and Vigil.

Thanks...ok, I’d take it the Specialist would be the same.

You can put thick grips on DW’s bushings(made by VZ). My Valor’s bushings were not staked. I recommend you remove and replace them with Challis bushings. Since I planned on throwing the originals away I used an easy out; there was plenty of thread locker on them.

Thanks! I’m a believer in Challis but if they’re slim bushings I’ll leave them be.

My buddies Vigil had a long trigger and Regular full thickness grips.
My blue Valor came with thin grips.

    Welcome to the forum!

My early 2016 V-BOB had VZ universal grip bushings on it. The Challis slim bushing removal tool does not work on VZ’s universal bushings. Three of my bushings had no Loctite and one did. Not a fan of the VZ bushings.... very soft metal.

DW bushings are not staked. All my 1911s have Challis bushings, which should be standard on all pistols. They’re that good!

I agree on all counts about Challis bushings. Saw the comment about VZ bushings not fitting the Challis tool. I found the don’t fit the Brownells driver bit either. Thanks to all who have replied.

Another Vote for Challis bushings and yes believe me DW Grip bushings are trash.. Way to soft.. Easy to remove because I easy out them and throw them away lol. If one or two is loctited a Screwdriver is usually a wasted attempt. The right size easy out is 100% bullet proof.. Works every time.

I used Challis's bushing removal tool on the DW thins.... worked very well. They came out easily and are usable should I put the originals back on.

Dan Wesson skinny grip bushings came right out with this reasonably priced (cheap) grip bushing tool from Smith and Alexander.

    Were they VZ universal?

My experience match what is on Challis’s web site:

Only one of my bushings had Loctite, but I used an easy out on all four. Even called DW for proper screw driver size before going the easy out route. The bushings are trash!

I just had DW build a Custom 9mm Valor for me and I requested bushings for thick grips. Keith told me the bushings they use allow both thin and standard thickness grips to be used. Only difference is the length of the grip screws supplied.
I do have Challis bushings on several of my guns but don’t see a reason to replace perfectly good bushings just to have Challis.
