Ejected Shell Ignites Live Round

Not sure this involves 1911's but here goes, a reliable friend says, that a buddy works at a range, that has just instituted a rule, that all boxes of ammo on the shooting bench, must be closed or covered. It seems that not once but twice in the last three weeks, an ejected round has hit the primer of a shell in an open box and caused it to fire. Reportedly, both instances involved Federal ammunition. Is there anyone, who thinks this is possible? Twice in three weeks? 🤔

I’ve only seen this actually happen on Colion Noirs link. To hear that it has happened multiple times in one range is an eye opener
"Ejected brass is evil" I`ll agree with that.LOL

Wife had made a table center piece for a grooms supper. Was a hunting theme. Gave her some 16 ga shotshells to hot glue to it. While back we were cleaning out the basement and she was tossing it out, put it in a trash bag and pitched it across the room. Something must have hit a primer when it hit the floor firing a shell. Scared the crap out of her but all the shot was contained in the trash bag.
I've been shooting a case of crappy S&B 115gr with unusually hard primers - I have issues getting them to go off constantly with a firing pin. I'd be shocked and amazed if a spent casing could do it. This is an eye opener.
Wow! Never even considered that could happen.
Yeahhhhh, internet videos should always be believed……..
‘Sounds like BS to me.

While I suppose anything CAN happen, I will only say that after more than 4 decades of shooting and 15 years of running a range, I have never seen that happen. I'm skeptical to say the least.

After shooting my favorite LW Commander and Stop for lunch on the way back from the range and wondering why people look at you funny when you have round circles on your forehead. LoL

Bet that made you jump. Got one down the back of my shirt last time. Wow bet that was funny to watch.😂 I guess I really need to fix that gun someday but it just works to darn good otherwise.

I have heard reliably of dropped rounds hitting a rock and firing.
Alarming but not very destructive.
I was there when a guy held his hand over the ejection port and the round hit the ejector and fired. That chewed up his hand a bit, he was out of the match.

The local rental range advises women against scoop necks and sandals.
I have seen a woman friend get caught twice, the second time with a round necked T shirt, not much gap, but a hot case found it. Both times, there was an energetic dance, but she kept the gun pointed downrange. Not everybody does.

I once had a hot case from the next spot over land on my back while shooting prone. That smarted even through a shirt.
I also had a hot case from an AR to my left hang between my glasses' temple and my head, that was much worse.

^ At a local range, had a lady wearing a scoop neck shirt end up doing the hot brass dance when one landed amidships. She did not keep the muzzle downrange and ended up touching one off into the leg of the guy with her. Chaos ensued, and it prompted immediate changes to the dress code requirements.
