I think it is a trade secret. I have a friend Jeff Flannery who owns and operates http://www.flannerygunengraving.com/
He has taught the trade to his son who works with him in the business. His work is grade AAAA. He currently is working
on my 1911 slide from a current build. I'll post photos when I pick it up.

They probably do it by hand which is a talent I never could learn at 57. It is also so expensive so I want to find a way that more people can afford. Cant wait to see yours.

It takes a lot of skill.. a lot of patience.. and a lot of research... but the info it out there. A good air graver start up set & practice pieces would probably set you back about $3K+.... But once you get into it, study it, and join afew engravers forums, there is a lot of good info out there. The rest are secrets learned thru doing...

I certainly plan to post pictures after all this work, $$$ and time. It will still be a while as it goes for a flush cut/reverse barrel job and a counter sunk slide stop and finally armor tuff coating.

Check ebay for "gravers" and jewellery tools. I see good sets from time to time. You may also check some of the jewellry stores around you, some of those guys can do really nice work.

This guy does really nice work, in a variety of styles http://grengraving.com/
