Not a rifle hunter, but I do like to shoot though. Top three would be .22 lr, .223/5.56, and .308.

    I don't know if I've got a favorite....

I plink with 223, hunt with 257 Roberts, target with 308.

I have a rebarrel in the works, going to a 260 Remington. Prob target with that, more than hunt.

For huntin' I'm kinda partial to my 7mm Mag but I like the venerable .308 as well...for deer sized game.

Long range work, depends on what I'm shootin' at or for...the above two apply pretty well. Although I have a new rifle in the works that will be chambered in .240NMC that is a 1000 yard cartridge wildcat.

Short range? We are talking rifles right?...LOL! .22lr I guess. Got a bunch of them. Also have become a fan of the .223 in a heavy bolt gun thanks to my friend DRYHUMOR. Lots of fun to shoot and super accurate.

My dad was always a big fan of the .308 for everything, it is a great caliber for North American game, including two legged critters who come calling in the night. That sort of rubbed of on me. I also love to hunt squirrels and rabbits with my .22 rimfires and recently I am becoming a big fan of the two .17 rimfires. I've started to branch out a bit and have a .243 and .270 now, I am going to hunt with the .243 for deer this year (this weekend is opening weekend!)

Defense work, I guess I really prefer my Remington 870 Tactical model with some 12 gauge 00 buckshot loads stuffed in its tube. Hard to argue with that for home defense. If you wanted to look at farther than 25 yards or make me actually choose a rifle, I would move on to a .223 or .308, AR platform.

Short Range and Long Range work go to the .308. The variety of accurate rifles and loads in this caliber is unlike any other. It will do everything from 1 yard to 1000 yards. I sure can't do much with it out to 1000 yards though, I will leave that to better riflemen than myself.

    .30-06 for hunting..
    .45-70 for SD
I don't shoot at much over 100m so both calibers I have work remarkably well.. (namely because I am lazy and don't like walkin that far to check targets) :thumb:

Hunting: 44mag lever... yea, yea, I know. With Indiana's screwy rules on brass length, no rifle cartridges... for deer that is. Use a 300 WinMag for squirrels if you like:der: Sad part is I have several of high powered scoped rifles sighted in for 50 yards since I shoot about 65 yards max on private property.

Plinking: 22lr of course. Cheap and it's pretty hard to blast through 550 rounds in a single sitting. Kids love it and I enjoy it more and more.

Fun: 7.62x54R since I have several length Mosins and a TIGR. Cheap ammo, accurate and LOUD. What more could you ask for.
Also shoot the snot out of IMI 5.56 in the AR's.

Self Defense: Mostly 12ga "00" since we have very close neighbors. They might get upset if I fire a rifle if needed and put ventilation holes in their house.

wow, you're the first to say 30-30! that's a bit of a surprise to me

my list is short: favorite cartridge i own? .270 Win. hunting and "long range" (which is 500 yards to me, but it can group a solid 8-10" from a 1972 mfg Ruger M77...)

defensive ammo for rifle? yeah.... i believe defensive should be shotgun or hand gun
short range? quite the same as defensive!

having said that, i'm a fan of many other calibers, but my only rifle is .270 win.
i like the 5.56NATO for long range (hey, the Corps taught me to shoot that bitch at 500 yards, iron sights). close range, also 5.56NATO. i like the 6.8SPCII, and my favorite that i have shot (from a rifle) was the 300RUM. whoa, that one was fun.
favorite GUN? probably the MK19 (40mm grenades launched fully auto downrange? good times!)
