firing pin retainer is slipping down and catching the hammer at the end of the slide stroke, weak firing pin spring? Thoughts?

A firing pin spring would be a cheap check.
One of those tight "fitted" firing pin stops would fix it for sure.

That is what I was thinking, but I thought it would be wise to see if there was something I was missing

The firing pin stop should not be doing that. It's not fitted right (way too loose) and, or the firing pin spring is way too light. At 1K rds. I think I would send it back and tell them to put a correct stop on it. And test fire it before it's sent back.

definitely too loose, but out of spec I suspect as well, like the hole in the FPS is too big. I've seen some pretty loosely fit fps and they not slip down like that. I'd say the hole is out of spec in the stop as well. Def Call Springfield they will take care of it. Maybe the firing pin slot is out of spec on the slide as well. Definitely just send it back, you could have a slide that got mis-cut back there.

It seems to be fit well, doesn't move around in the cut. Really odd
I contacted Springfield tp send it back, lets see what they say

I was thinking this orginally, swapped out for a new firing pin, kept happening with the same frequency. Made sure firing pin channel and breech face were perfectly clean

Very strange. I've had some pretty loose stops on Colts and never had this problem. Hopefully, Springfield will get you sorted.
