    Bill,
I saw in another thread you had interest in a quill mounted indicator for the 'Z' axis.
Here are a few pics of my set-up:

Pretty self explanatory. Tight fitting stud in the hole of the quill stop, secured with a set screw at an angle.
I vastly prefer an analog read-out vs a digital for the 'Z' axis

Got a couple of cheap, new clappers in this afternoon. One Fowler, one offshore.
Both feel great and seem capable of .001" accuracy. Both from MSCdirect.com.
Total cost for both was like $45!
There is a part of me that loves cheap tools!

Also a pic of the spindle mounted light. I love this thing!
    Cheap and available on E-Bay.

Now that Sir, sounds like a plan! :)

Thanks for the pics too. Not sure if I was having a Sr moment or what, but I was having difficulty getting my head wrapped around that. Looks like a 2" DI would be perfect for that spot. I wanted a 4-axis DRO that included a magnetic scale for the quill but couldn't justify the extra cost at that time. But there are times when I need to know how far I'm plunging the quill when drilling/boring a blind or whatever.

I have one of those magnetic LED rings on my mill and love the thing. No shadows! Perfect for these old eyes.

I had a Fowler caliper and used it for many years. It was donated to a good friend when he got a small bench mill and lathe to start making small parts for his various motorcycle projects. IIRC I threw in a couple of mics from Shars too.

Nothing wrong with cheap tools at times, as long as they do the job. :D

Nobody is going to mention the cut-off tap shank the indicator point is touching? Love it!

It's actually a piece of drill blank that I had ground and used as a broach.

When I first saw that I started thinking that I could put a rectangular piece in there instead, with a rack and pinion setup for fine adjust.

Then I took another sip of my morning coffee and wondered what the heck I was just thinking?!?! Am I nuts?!?!

Sometimes I go down a rabbit hole just because I can... :D

I thought about a digital, but I'm so sick and tired of replacing batteries in my digital mics that I went back to using the verniers. Last thing I want is another battery hungry readout. ;)

For me, in many cases, such as peck drilling a small and deep hole,
it's a lot easier to mentally process the sweep/rotation of a needle vs having to process numbers.
Think of a hot rod tachometer. By the time your mind reacted to the numbers indicating the 8000rpm redline, you'd be well over!
Lots simpler to watch/anticipate the sweep as it nears 12 o-clock or where ever your bezel indicates.

The 16x60 lathe I learned on had a DI on it that we used when threading barrels and comps. I learned real quick how to disengage the threading lever (and bump the cross-feed) while watching a sweeping needle. :)

My fav on the 'y' axis of a lathe is a Trav-A-Dial.
    Analog.
    Sweeping needle.
Good for single point threading into a wall.

Lol......No, I purchased this machine set up ready to go, it only had a few hours use on it. God has blessed me tremendously.

    Pistolwretch,
Thanks for posting a picture of that spindle light, I'll have to get one, never knew something like that existed. What brand is it?

    Chuck,

Did you really find a Fowler caliper for <$45 atMSCDirect? Was it a close-out/special of some kind?
