Looking at a possible buy, my local gun shop has a Springfield Armory Garrison 9mm full size blued steel gun.
Going to run me about $800 OTD is it worth the squeeze?

Don’t hesitate. I have the same gun and absolutely love it. It’s the only gun I have almost bought two of. Seriously have considered buying my LGS’s second Garrison 9mm for $760.

I would go as far as to say it’s my favorite pistol right now.

I'm a SA fan not quite a fanboy but a solid fan!
If you like it, GET IT.
It will do you proud.
Forged frame and slide so worth any up grades you do to it!

The Garrison is a solid gun for a production model. Make sure to check it over thoroughly before you buy it. A couple people on this site mentioned rear slide/frame fit being off. Personally, I love mine!

Got one. A great value and nice piece. Good to go! Same for the 45 version.
Are you going to keep it “as is” or customize?

I have one and as mentioned earlier, a good value and a solid gun.
For me, I got what I payed for. I felt a better investment overall, than some other “cheaper” alternatives.
Also, took about 200 rounds (normal 115 gr.) to settle in where any double feeds or out of battery instances that occurred, have now disappeared.
She now runs flawlessly.
Paint me as a happy customer and owner.

I have two, a .45 and a 9mm. Both are quite good pistols, as-is, but I did swap out the skinny grips for standard width grips, I don't much like the skinny grips. I also added S&A magwells, just because. Neither have given me a hint of trouble so far. I like them a lot, nothing they don't need, and everything they should have. Good pistols. I probably shoot the 9mm more, simply due to the cost of ammo, but I think they are a bargain for the features offered. I also favor an arched housing, which is why I added the S&A magwells.

I have a blue .45 and it’s a great gun for the money. Better fit and finish than a lot out there for far more.
I’ll be buying a stainless 9 as soon as I find a deal.
I wish Springfield would build a Garrison Commander.

Purchased one off GB a few weeks ago as a "take-apart and piddle with" gun. I was pleasantly surprised to see what a nice production gun it was. Really nice for the price.

Thanks for the replies so far, the Garrison I am looking at has a slide that sticks out past the frame in the back. Definitely not flush with the rear of the frame, barrel locks up tight, the trigger pull is decent, and there is a small amount of play in a slide to frame fit.
This would be my first 1911 chambered in 9 mm I have two Wilson CQBs, and to Dan Wessons, all 4 are full size 45 guns.
Yep, mine too has a titch of an overhang,...but as anal as I am...it really doesn’t bother me.
Now if it were a custom pricey special one of a kind then yeah, I’d pretty much not be happy.
But for what she is and cost....I’m happy.
All my “irons” are shooters....No Safe Queens here.
Hard to beat most SA 1911's for the price.

I bought the stainless 9mm. I think it is a great gun for the money. I always steered away from SA because of the boycott a few years ago, but its hard to argue with the value at this price. I liked it so much when I saw a 4 1/4" Prodigy on the shelf a month later I bought it. I really like it too. Both of them have very tight chambers so I had to get an undersize resizing die. I also run every case through a bulge buster (with 9mm Mac carbide die), because that is quicker than case gauging every one.
I have a blue 45 that I bought from a great member here and like it a whole lot. So I would say go for it. Springfield 's lifetime customer service is worth a lot. As ratwhacker noted above, you may need to spend a couple extra bucks to replace the thin grips and bushings that come on the Garrison.
I have one in 45 and can not get enough of it! Can shoot it all day and I keep coming back for more.
