    Hey addicts,

I’m getting a custom 1911 build on a Colt commander, it’s a full overhaul, so I’m pretty much just keeping the slide and frame. I’ve requested to get my initials engraved on the gun, is this a good idea/ common practice or will it affect the value of the gun if I choose to sell it some day.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

If you intend to pass it to a kid some day and you like it now then go for it, but, if there is any chance you will lose interest and sell it....

Would you pay top dollar for a high-end car with the previous owner's initials painted on the doors?

Get some custom grips with your initials.

Unless you plan on becoming famous, this is going to make your gun harder to sell/trade.

I wouldn’t put my initials on anything I didn’t intend to keep forever. It will affect the resale value for sure.

Depending on what happens in the future, this could be akin to having your future ex-girlfriend's name tattooed on your penis.

Of course if your initials are the same as a famous Smith, actor, or politician . . . .

Unfortunately, putting your name/initials on the gun is a poor decision. As noted above, it will certainly negatively impact the resale. Even if you plan on keeping it forever, and being buried with it, as we all do when getting something new, time and circumstances change, and items we would never sell get sold.

I like the suggestion above the best, get personalized grips. No impact on resale and you can move them from 1911 to 1911 as guns or circumstances change.

You could always get a nice leather holster with your initials on it. I would not put them on the gun. Of course, it is your gun!

    How about this...

Instead of getting your initials engraved/stamped on to your gun, get your gun's name tattooed on you.

Really bad idea to get your initials on a gun that you might someday sell. NO ONE will want it.

Like the others said, only do it if it's a gun you'll never sell. I had a Colt Commander built for my son when he earned his way into spec ops and had it engraved with his unit crest, motto, and his initials. Obviously, the gun is meant to be an heirloom piece that he keeps forever and eventually passes down.

It might be OK if your initials are "JMB"
