My first wifes father ended up being one of my best friends. Back in the late 80s we were together all the time, fishing, working on cars, 31 hour rode trips to pick up cars, vacations, you name it. One of the kindest men I have ever met. After my 28 year marriage to his daughter ended (my fault) I figured he was mad........but he never was, in fact he saw my side better then anyone else did. When he passed away a few years ago, I told my son if his grandma ever wanted to sell his grandpas Ruger Single Six, I would buy it. Time passed and he couldn't find it, numerous relatives came and went living in the house and everyone figured it somehow disappeared. One day my son called me, grandma was short on cash and wanted to know if I would buy grandpas 2 rifles, both .22s, I gave her a fair price even though I didn't really want them. Couple more years pass, my son and I finally have a close relationship, he had a son with a girl and they had broke up, I became friends with her and her father (my minister), yea I KNOW! Anyway my son could have visitation with his son on one condition, it was at my house. As a way to show him how proud I am of him for turning out to be a good father and a hard worker, I made a guitar for him for Christmas, yes he almost cried when he opened it. He told me he felt bad because he couldn't get me anything for Christmas, of course that was fine with me, all I wanted was for him and his son, my daughter and grand daughter to show up and they all did. He lives with his grandma now and has to help with the bills. Apparently he began searching the house for the Ruger again and as the story goes, he was about to give up after searching and searching his grandfathers room closets and drawers. Then he dropped something............it rolled under a dresser................he got down on his hands and knees and used his phone as a light............whats that red box??????? Turns out it was my birthday present from my son and my late father in law!
