Guide rod question

I have what will most likely be a dumb question.
Is there any reason I can't remove my Prodigy's 2 pc guide rod and run a standard GR I have laying around with the stock reverse plug?
I know the Reverse plug has a hole in it for the stock 2 pc flgr, but I can't see where the spring would be able to come out of said hole.
It's a range toy so not worried so much about dirt or anything getting into it.
