Thank you gents. I start with a simple layout defining the borders and master lines of the pattern. After cutting these lightly witha narrow chisel, I set dividers to the width necessary to render the specified lines per inch. Each line is laid out with the dividers off the previous line and cut lightly with a narrow chisel. Once the full pattern is cut I use a 90' square chisel to slowly deepen and widen each line until every diamond forms a point. At the same time I continually deepen the borders as well until everything looks right.

Very cool seeing how you chisel it! In my I had always pictured it being done with a file that had grooves at specific lines per inch.

File cut and chiseled checkering look markedly different. The chiseled checkering has whatever finish the chisel has on the cutting edges of the chisel.

I've done checkering both ways.

The way you lay it out reminds me of the way we lay out decorative wraps on fishing rods

Nylon thread however is much more forgiving
