I carry one spare magazine whether it's a single stack 1911 or a double stack pistol. Statistically, that's plenty for a self defense situation.

If you need more than one spare magazine you may need to practice more.

Let the risk of your “mission” determine what capability you need.

Grocery store down the street to grab some milk? 1.

Camping trip across the state in an unknown area with an unknown threat assessment level? 2-4.

I always carry at least one spare with any auto. 1911s I often carry two; one appendix next to the gun and one in the front jeans pocket. It’s the beauty of the 1911; the mags are so slim you can comfortably slip them in a pocket with no ill effects to comfort.

I can't predict the risk factor of where I'm going. According to recent history, there is no safe location: grocery store, gas station, church, synagogue, movie theater, outdoor concert, night club, medical office, hospital, malls, driving down the highway, grade school, high school, university, public park, private business, police station and your home and I'm sure I left some out.

Bad guys have no defined limits where they may chose to do harm. Plan for the worst scenario no matter where you're going. The element of surprise is on your side.

Hi all. New member here. I'm just curious, wondering for others that carry 1911's, how many spare magazine's do you carry?

I'm fairly new to every day carry and just wondering because a single stack 1911 generally has a much lower magazine capacity than a double stack 9mm for example. Do you compensate for the lower capacity by carrying more mags, or do you still just carry one or two?

I started out carrying 4 spares, based on the thought that 4 8 round single stack mags is roughly equal to two 15 round 9mm double stack mags which would be pretty common in this 9mm world. I have since switched to just two 8 round spares out of fear that in a defensive situation a prosecutor might focus on the number of mags and say it's excessive. Just wondering what other's do.
Welcome from Northern Indiana enjoy the conversation,
I normally cary 2 spare mags.

Sorry, I got to the Hind helicopter and fell off the throne laughing. Have a great time at Gunsite.
i apololgize for my sarcasm. For the past 2 weeks I have been bedridden with severe osteoarthritis of my left hip waiting for appointments and pretty unable to do anything. I am amongst the world's worst patients and detest aanything wrong with me. But I have checked and read here everyday and found a little bit of solace and sanctuary amongst you...my brothers and sisters in arms. Thank You.

Hey Kevin, & welcome from S Florida.
I carry 1 extra mag - not for capacity but as back-up to cover the most common malfunction. Unless you're military, LEO, a drug dealer or live in a war zone, a civilian's need for double stacks or multiple back-up mags is marketing hype. Keep in mind, bad guys - armed or not - who target civilians are NOT all that anxious to engage. They're cowards who pick on the weak and they want NO resistance ... the mere sight of weapon immediately alters their thinking (a cell phone once saved my pink little butt).

More important than all that is to assure that YOU land a good first shot. And where it's not too likely that a bad guy is gonna let you take a few warm-up draws & shots first, the most important drill for self-defense is, IMHO, 4-5 cold, first shot drills - whether from the hip or the 'high' position in C.A.R - each and every day!

All that said ... choices are a most beautiful thing.

And these punks are unlikely to train at all, dont know much about self defense ammo.....so an average interested citizen actually has at least 1-2 advantages,

I too like @M45A1 carry mission specific. Around town I carry 1 spare, when I go to Phoenix 2 spares, usually keep the second in the glove box. When I travel around NYC, usually twice a year, I carry 2 spare magazines magazines on me. After seeing the carnage in NYC yesterday I don't think it's overdoing it.

At this point it just makes good fashion sense!

I generally carry 1, 2 at most. Both single sparks s4c's. When im not carrying a mag/light combo rig on the belt. Mostly for any malfunctions that may occur. If im out with the wife, I carry one of hers as well, tiny 380 mag.

I keep mags loaded in various places also. In affordable cross body bags conveniently placed. 2 pistol mags (1, 1911; 1, berreta), 1 AR mag, cash, small ifak, TQ and couple cliff bars. Alot more in a bag that goes in the truck, where I go.

Over board, maybe. But it won't be if I need it. I downsized alot over the years.

Sir, and with all due respect, times have changed. While your statements were true 20 years ago, they have been busy.

The bad guys are not only practicing, they are entering competitions. In prisons they spend time in the yards practicing disarming moves while under the gun. This is well known.

For all of us, the most egregious mistake we can make is to underestimate our opponents.

Stay Safe

However, these days it seems that the risk levels between grocery store, church, school and Walmart have become somewhat blurred.
As for bad parts of town - I worked in that bull💩 for 20 years, so I avoid now no matter HOW armed!
And as for camping in the unknown ... my idea of camping is a Holiday Inn!!!! 😉😁
