    ...anything to sell.
Does that mean I shouldn't post on Addicts anymore?

This thread inspired by hitting the "recent posts" button this morning...

I think he’s inferring that it looks like a “fer sail” sight and not a discussion forum:o.o: I get that feeling too sometimes but I find plenty to read and enjoy:cool:

The for sale threads can be interesting....

I'm always amazed at the lunatics that spend thousands on a pistol and barely shoot it.
I'm the third owner, gun has 200 flawless rounds through it.

    Whiskey Tango Foxtrot???

Classifieds, gun porn, and beginner questions are what tends to dominate gun forums. 1911Addicts is not immune to this.

If you don't like this trend, then take the initiative to post something more substantive. No special permissions needed to do this. Just do it.

Its these great “lunatics” that got me interested in this forum in the first place. I would guess a lot of new members join for the deals and stay for the content

I also have no problem with the rich kids buying premium 1911's, doing a little fondling, and then selling the guns at a discounted price. :)

I spend at least as much time looking at amusing images, girls with and without guns images, food and beverage images, and classifieds as I do reading real gun-related content. As much as it's a gun forum, this is also just a generally awesome site for like-minded people to hang out.

Personally, I see it as a huge advantage over the excessive moderation on TOOS. I'm glad I got banned over there or I probably would have never moved over here.

I used to be more of a collector. Then I figured out that I greatly prefer having experiences with my guns (classes, matches and the travel for both + putting a lot of rounds through them) to acquiring lots of them.

I find I start thinking about “the next one” before I even get the latest one home. That’s why I stopped buying as many. (And I still have a stooopid number of them).

Well I have been purchasing guns for 20 years which is far less than others but I haven't sold a one. Fair to say if given the circumstances some here recently encountered I might have to but been fortunate to not yet be in that position.

I also try to buy guns I like and for many it's as much about esthetics as it is about function. I think many of the pieces I see here are nothing short of art and sometimes art is a product of disposable income. As soon as it does not become disposable they are assets which may have to be liquidated.

I have no problem with people selling and actually quite enjoy seeing the collections put up for sale. If your here to strictly sale guns I think your missing a broad knowledge base of folks whom have a lot to contribute (myself not included) but so long as your not malicious I guess your welcome.

Course if your here to buy I think their are some damn good deals to be had from people who's acquired taste of "art" have changed.

I was thinking the same thing but didn't know how to begin.

Seems like Addicts is becoming the "Carmax" of 1911 sites.

Maybe change the name to "Gatmax"?

To me, this site is in a continual state of flux. People come and go. Some get run off. The ones with disposable income buy and sell. Just the amount of information contained in this site has grown immensely in my time here. Most 1911 issues can be found in the forums if people care to look.
Always considered Zoid part of the institution, but found posts of his asking the same 1911 questions I asked myself a while back when he was learning the platform also.
Don't think you can find a more knowledgeable group anywhere on the net. Add to that, members who have stayed are learning more. The barrel leg fit, and barrel hood discussions are prime examples.
I consider this group part of my family. Take the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly, because that is what family does.

I know exactly what you're talking about and thought the same thing this morning.

This forum wasn't always like this. Up until the last year or two this was a place where serious 1911 aficionados could hang out and primarily talk 1911s. The quality of guns owned by the members and being discussed, and the collective knowledge on the subject, really set this forum apart from others. It was the best kept secret in 1911 based social media. Now the word is out and, to a great degree, it's becoming just another gun forum thanks in large part to the influx of new members that bring their TOS and TOOS type attitudes and BS with them and those that are rank beginners, though I'd rather see beginners than the others. I'm sure there are more members here that do not like this trend, as evidenced by a noticeable reduction in participation from the members that have been here the longest.

All forums evolve, regardless of the topic. When I signed up there were multiple posts extolling the virtues of not being like the OS, or the OOS. I liked that. Nobody wants to be jumped on if they ask a technical question whose solution is obvious to another member and the OP just picked up a 1911 one day before his/her post. Likewise, most folks don’t like forums dominated by two or three members; I don’t see that here.
    Frankly, I like it here.

I'm all for helping to turn this forum into a more serious platform for discussing 1911's. My point is that it won't happen if all we do is sit back, furl our brows, and wait for someone else to post something of substance.

Judging by the responses to the barrel fitting threads, I think the appetite is there for that type of content. People just need to take the initiative to create more content like that. Ask a good question, and/or report on some interesting thing you did to advance your understanding of the platform and its history.

Personally, I'm going to try to be more active in the training sub forum. I'll be starting IDPA this summer as well participating in some local action pistol matches. (And I'll be getting involved in Appleseed.) But, I'm still learning. I can't and won't hide that.

So, if you want things to change, please lead by example. Create a thread that is representative of the kind of content this forum should be about. I'll happily do what I can to support it in a serious/professional manner.

My point was that the type of forum you're talking about in this post is exactly what this forum WAS, but as the membership has increased that has been diluted, resulting in a more generic gun forum with a looser 1911 focus. Many of the "older" members still participating regularly answer questions, give advice, make suggestions, and relate experiences, in addition to posting new subject matter of their own. If you're not seeing those posts maybe it's because they're getting lost in the recent surge of "Classifieds, gun porn, and beginner questions".
