After seeing this, I now have a new respect for K9 units. It's amazing how effective dogs (German Shepards) are at taking down criminals and flushing them out of vehicles.

Malinois are very good K9 animals as they are more athletic and higher energy than GSD’s. They do not make very good pets and are less “people dogs” than GSD’s.

    I
have had 4 GSD’s and now have a part Belgian/GSD who was a K9 “reject” who I rehomed from a local LEO. She is larger than the typical Malinois as GSD’s are bigger dogs generally. Yet she is more athletic and aggressive than a Shep, but much more loyal and Shepherd like than a Malinois. Of the GSD’s I have had, she is my favorite in terms of personality. And super protective of my family.

During a period of alcohol-infused misguided youth, a large group of us ran onto the field in the middle of a college rugby match. The game was boring and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Instead of their usual tactics of teargas and water cannon, the LEO’s took a simpler approach - they let go the leashes on a bunch of 100lb German Shepard meat-missiles....It’s amazing how fast a few hundred students sobered up and got back in their seats !

I'm kind of partial to Shepards myself. That knuckle head to the left is the most loyal dog I ever had, and he's real protective of the family.

Beautiful Shep...I have seen that avatar and admired! I have said this more than a few times. If human beings behaved/conducted themselves like GSD's....there would be far fewer problems in the world.

A young eager patrol officer back in the 80s and the best friend/partner I ever had.

Seeing the cage in ChuckC's photo, reminded me of one (of many) amusing anecdote about my years as a K9 Handler. I had just arrested an African American on a warrant and was transporting him to county when he started to scream. Seems he had leaned back against the cage and part of his Afro (in the 80s and 90s you still saw an Afro on occasion) had poofed through the cage hole. Zack grabbed it with his front teeth an was tugging on a wad of hair like it was a chew toy. RIP my very good friend.

I have never had the pleasure of serving with a true k9. However my heart is with those fluffy Leo's. My best friend ever was a furry rottweiler girl. She made the rule that if I know you, you come in the garage or the back door. Either way that big ball of fluff was quiet and stiff legged. Be careful when shes quiet...I miss my big girl. Since her passing I've downgraded in the defense department. 20181003_220149.jpg He might hump a bad un into submission if he's feeling frisky.
