Well first off, no one was hurt at all, so all is well there. I live in western Kentucky and we have several rivers right here that are used extensively for river boat transportation. Well the other night the Delta Mariner, a rather peculiar cargo ship that is designed for both ocean going and river transport, chose to go under the wrong portion of one of our local bridges and took a section out of it. The section of bridge actually landed and stayed on the top of the ship though I don't have a photo of that. Curiously, the Delta Mariner apparently carries rocket parts for NASA, heh.

I wonder if the pilot felt the urge to poop after that happened?

Captains do command the ship/boat however when in busy ports, a harbor pilot comes on board to help navigate the close quarters. For whatever reason, they are called pilots. There would have been no pilot on board in this area.

It doesn't look as if that ship would have cleared any of the spans.

In engineering, we wouldn't call that a "bridge collapse." It would be a bridge knocked down. :eyebrows:

The initial report was a tow boat hit a pylon and collasped the bridge. It turned out to be very wrong, heh.

How would that ship have fit under any of those spans? It looks way too big.

Dont know for sure, but in some pictures it looks like one side of the bridge is higher than the other. The weight of the ship could be a factor as well if it would have enough room to pass through.
