Afternoon,

I've seen references here and there from our more experienced addicts disparaging Ayoob, and I've even come across a thread on another forum where the assertion was made that he has been caught falsifying data sometime in the somewhat distant past. Does anyone have any details, or a link to an explanation? I don't follow him regularly, but I have not personally come across any reason to discount his opinion. I'm curious about the backstory.

Keyboard ninjas my guy.

He made himself a good hustle and career. Anyone who looks up to him or down on him could better spend their time looking in the mirror.
Mike Harries used to call him Massad the boob. Don't know of anyone in the industry including API instructors that thought much of him unless it was beneficial for them.

He could use a better toupee, that's for sure.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not passing judgement on the man with that comment. He speaks clearly and with some authority. I haven't heard him say anything that didn't make sense but rather made a lot of sense.

I just find myself staring at that wig every time I see him. Surely he doesn't think it's a secret?
This is coming from someone who has been shaving his head for a long time.

Self proclaimed “expert” telling folks about gunfights and combat when he is nothing more then a writer and part-time/volunteer police officer with no firsthand experience on the matter.

Would I pay for advice on how to become a powerlifter from someone who has never lifted a day in their life? Same answer as to his books about combat and gunfighting.

Self proclaimed? Not hardly, he is roundly recognized as an expert witness by courts all over the country. He has also taught classes since 1981, and is roundly recognized as an expert marksman based off competition.

Col Cooper was known to recommend him for the legal side of things after a shooting. I believe Clint Smith has as well.

Maybe he never saw the elephant, but to quote Clint Smith,

"The way I feel about it that I would not want a knee surgeon working on my brain. I feel that training and certain life experiences can contribute to making a better teacher, but it's not required. That said, I would look for someone who can communicate information to our students. In other words I want a teacher, not an instructor and there is a difference. My wife of 18 years has been teaching firearms and tactics for 25 years. She is a Tactical Emergency Medical Support medic for our local sheriff's office. Has she had the requirements that Mr. Cooper required? No. But she is a teacher at heart with decades of firearms and tactics training. That is what I am looking for as far as my staff. "

Mas is more of an expert than I ever will be.

Personalities and egos get involved, and don't kid yourself anyone in a position to discount "Mas" has and ego.

Clint and Cooper didn't speak for a decade or more because of egos, the "feud" between Elmer Keith and Jack O'Connor was a 50 year pennis measuring contest, there are 2 current smiths who are highly regarded that I won't say have a feud but their relationship is interesting because of egos.

To 99.99% of this Board....Mas is definitely an expert and worth listening to. If your teaching at Gunsite or the commander of LA SWATT.... maybe not. But for us mere mortals everyone in this thread wishes they knew as much or were the equal to Mas with a gun.

If I was ever in court over a lawful use of my firearm I would be more than happy -- grateful even -- to have him along as an expert witness.

Likewise, I know some folks who have taken a course or two from him and who thought it added good tools to their toolkit -- and these are people I look up to and who have solid credentials.

Besides ... Hackathorn and Wilson don't seem to mind sharing company with him lately ...

I've taken LFI 1 & 2, now Mag 40 & 80 and have been an assistant instructor for MAG classes for 5-6 years although nothing recently. So I am a bit biased.

That said, Mas provides a great deal of legal information in his classes in a format that most can understand and benefit from. His shooting is very good too but quite a bit different than the Gunsite discipline.

Many don't like him, many more do. You don't have to like the guy to recognize that he is excellent at what he does.

I would highly recommend taking MAG 40 or MAG 20 Legal.

I have read articles by him prior to the internet being in existence. His reviews of firearms are informative. He seems to certainly know more than most of us in terms of the legality of lethal force. And I think in his career if he was all bluster and BS, he would have been found out and drummed out. Not as important or without any equal veracity is his propensity to wear John Travolta's old rugs.

If he was wearing white patent leather shoes with the matching holster and gunbelt set I still wouldn't buy a used Rambler from him.

He just looks like the kind of guy who would be hanging around the Greyhound bus terminal restroom.

But, on the other hand, here I am, knowing what a guy that hangs around there looks like.

I'll admit to being interested in what he has to say. Just like I'm interested in most firearms content that I stumble across on the internet. No more, no less.

If I don't like the content I can pretty much tell about 10 seconds into the clip. You know the internet experts I'm talking about.

I'm jaded by decades of reading gun magazines with contributors who would have you wearing your straw hat to the Christmas party.

Their glowing reviews are always interspersed with full page color advertisements for the pistol they are drooling over.

It's a business, I get it.
