When putting together a long slide build I have wondered what is involved and what is compatible on putting together a pistol that can be used as a platform for multiple calibers?
Of course barrels, recoil springs, magazines would need to be changed.
Anybody out there who has done this type of thing on a 1911 platform?
This is a gun Joe Chambers built. It is a bobtailed frame and has 2 slides and 3 barrels. It has a .45 slide and barrel then the other slide accommodates a 9mm barrel and a 3rd barrel for .38 super. So it can be done.
One slide, 3 barrels - .38 Super, 9mm, 9x23 Winchester. Each barrel has it's own bushing and uses a different weight recoil spring. Ejector and extractor are tuned/tweaked to work with all three rounds. Uses two different mags, one for 9mm, one for Super and 9x23.
Interested in this thread. I plan to build a 1911 in 45GAP. Reason being, I have acquired about 20,000 once fired cases. As a reloader, it makes sense to have a platform to use them. I have a Glock 37 to use them in now and that's great, but I love 1911's and would love to have one chambered for the cartridge. It actually a very efficient cartridge.
The May/June issue of American Handgunner had the Tussey 1911 "Six Shooter" He did .22LR (conversion unit slide), 9mm, 38 Super, 40 S&W, .357 SIG, and 45ACP. Of course ramped barrels and a few different top ends. In the article it said he got tired of the project before he did a 10mm and I thought he could have added 400 Corbon also.
This is what I was thinking. Put together an excellent pistol in order to use several calibers. Although being an addict we want high performance in any endeavour.
