I'm looking to get my first 1911 and am torn between several. Which would you suggest I go for?

    Springfield Range Officer Stainless

    Springfield Range Officer Loaded Elite

    Kimber Stainless II

    Smith & Wesson 1911 E Series M1911

    Dan Wesson PM45

I'm leaning towards the Dan Wesson and have seen it for sale at $1300 which seems like a reasonable price. I'm wondering for that kind of money am I missing out on something else where I can get more for the money? I most likely won't be using it for anything but range shooting (I'd love to shoot outside of a range but that seems to be impossible in NJ). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Dan Wesson is the best bet, if you can find one in your price range. Otherwise, I would go with one of the Springfields.

The Wesson would be the way I would lean also.
Have you looked through the classifieds here?
You might find something in your price range that jumps out at you.
Good luck and enjoy your new 1911 whatever it turns out to be.

Welcome! I would also suggest Dan Wesson, followed by Springfield

Dan Wesson. RO is a nice little gun, but for my money, DW is the way to go. For me, front strap checkering is a must. Grip tape will work for a while, but I want the checkering, and at DW's price point, you get that plus a nicer (IMHO) gun for not much more $,

Go with the Dan Wesson, you won't regret it. It's the gateway to high quality 1911's.

I prefer the “less is more” concept”. Take a long look at the slide of all four manufactures listed. Three of the four are cluttered up with bill board roll marks, and front cocking serrations. All of which, don’t appeal to me. The Dan Wesson slide is clean, almost naked. Dan Wesson quality is first rate. The other three manufacturers build good pistols, but I would be most pleased with any Dan Wesson. Dan Wesson builds a host of 1911s, that I would be proud to own. Fit, form, and function! Best of luck with your choice

    Second WWB's statement.

"Three of the four are cluttered up with bill board roll marks, and front cocking serrations. All of which, don’t appeal to me. The Dan Wesson slide is clean, almost naked."

Even if all things were equal, and they're not as the Wessons are better guns, 41 Charlie nailed it for the win!

I bought a DW for my first 1911 last year. My second choice was the Springfield TRP.

Thanks for the help guys! I think I'm leaning toward the DW. I found one for about $1400 which seems like a good price given the MSRP is $300 more.

I've always had a lot of love for Springfield's 1911s. Have you checked out a TRP? I feel like for the $$ the TRP is hard to beat. I've gotten to play with some Dan Wesson's lately and they're damn nice pistols too.

DW. If you start with Dan Wesson. You are further ahead in your search for the perfect 1911. You will want more. Good luck.

Without a doubt Dan Wesson. Check out all of the DW models. You may find another one you like. Although the Valor has been discontinued, they are still available and a great pistol
