My Nighthawk order went in ONE YEAR AGO TODAY..... but how fast is the turnaround on custom work on COLTS and other non-NHC pistols?

12 months and the anxiety is almost killing me. At this point I'm hoping the 18 months I was originally quoted turns out to be accurate, because with Tax Time coming in here, I won't have an extra $5k just sitting around for a while lol....

But my question is this; I see a lot of COLT pistols that have been sent into Nighthawk for trigger jobs, near-full-house custom jobs, and everything in between. I remember years ago asking another "Big Name" company what the process was for a full action-work job and sights replacement, they told me to send in my gun... and at some point in the following 18 - 24 weeks someone would call me to go over everything and give me a quote. Then another 2 - 4 weeks for the work to be completed, tested and put in the mail back to me. So, conceivably, an 8-month wait all told.

What's the process with NHC? Has anyone recently had work done? How long did it take? Did you find the pricing to be competitive with the better One-Man-Show Smiths we know and love here at Addicts?

Would love to hear any comments and of course, PICS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

My only custom shop experience was wit NH a couple of years ago. Filled out the online form and a day or two later Bob calls me to go over the work list. Anodize the frame, stake the plunger tube, FBI style cut and chamfer the slide stop, and black DLC all of the stainless parts including slide. Mailed my gun in, and got notice via email that they had it. About 6 weeks later I got notice they were shipping it back to me.

I got one back from them last month, it took about 10 months total. Bob was great I worked with him directly for the entire process, mostly via email.

Wow, that would kill me also! I had to wait 3 months for my Staccato and thought that was bad. When I ordered my Tucker Gunleather holster for it, during the middle of the pandamic, it took almost a year. Hope you get it soon sir.
I have a Valor in with them now for a full build
Told 1 year I am about 6 months in .
Last valor I sent in took 7 months
Well worth the wait 👍
I was told 24 months on new builds last week 😳
That is new pistol builds to clarify
Damn !
@DWPW , was your order, by any chance, placed with Joe Lehr ?

I've been waiting a lot longer than that for a Staccato that was supposed to start shipping in "mid December" lol..

If you're referring to the Colt I want to send it, I have no put the order in yet. If you're referring to my regular NHC Bull Officer build, I did not request a specific smith, and the gun has not yet been "kitted", so I don't yet know who will be building it.

To explain:
I have a medium-size project I want done on a very special 1911 Officers I own. It's more like a good-size list of a-la-carte services than a "full build", as the pistol has already been through what one could call a "full house' build before I owned it. I want the barrel and possibly the ignition components replaced, but those are the only mechanical or corrective things... everything else is cosmetic.

The problem I faced is that most of the best-respected smiths out there who were willing to work on Officers, have all closed their books, retired, or are otherwise no longer accepting this kind of work; Rob D'Andrea, John Harrison, CT Brian... all a NO-GO (I was able to convince John Harrison to accept in my SA EMP4CCC for new sights, new ignition components, and a general once-over). Many other smiths wont work on Officers for whatever reason. My next first choice was Greg Derr, as his Officer and Defender work is amazing... but he generally seems to focus on building "Derr Brand" full customs with his own specific vision imparted on them, rather than doing a bunch of piece-work on an existing gun. He has not said "NO" but he has not said "YES" either.

So, next I was able to get in touch with Don Williams at The Action Works. Don is Legend-Status and we had a GREAT talk. He agreed to take my project and said I could send it in sometime after March... but since then two people have sort of warned me away from him.... I am still waiting for specifics on this. Last I came around to Bob Cogan. I like Bob...I have seen some work of his which was of excellent quality... and I've seen some pictures of his work which I was not so impressed with... but since my requested aesthetic work is all pretty simple, and because I ALSO happen to want to have it hard chromed eventually I thought I'd be okay. But once again I've gotten warnings against using Bob. Still waiting on the details of that, as well. A few days ago I got in touch with Dave Laubert, who has said he can PROBABLY take the job this spring... but I've had no real conversation with him, and didn't exactly get the warm & fuzzies from his email.

And so, now, almost for want of any remaining options, I'm thinking about going with Nighthawk. Who knows. If I send it in, it may be ready around the same time as my regular NHC build I put in last year.

Ah....my post above was somewhat of a wisecrack.....or a warning.

Joe Lehr, the unpopular customer service guy....not Joey Lehr the gifted & talented smith.

I'd be tickled to death if I could line up Joey Lehr for my next Nighthawk build. Bigtime tickled.

On the flip side.....I'll take countermeasure to sidestep dealing with Joe as my liaison.

A year into your wait. I can relate, sir. Can relate well.
I hope that you are as pleased with yours as have been with my own Hawks. Very pleased and it comes through every range trip, too. 👍 👍 👍

Best wishes on yours coming along.

@Dub ahhh okay gotcha. No I only ever dealt with Scotty at NHC... and believe me, I made his life MISERABLE.

It was unintentional, but I definitely was not an easy customer to deal with. Scotty was always a consummate professional, but I have no doubt he'll be happy to see the back of me...

I sent in a combat commander in late December of 2021, came back first week of November 2022. It had some machining issues that I sent it back to get cleaned up, but turnaround time on that was fairly quick, had it back in 2-3 weeks.

I sent one in for a new barrel a little over a year ago. Was originally told 5-6 months. All in it was closer to 8 months, delay was in the dlc shop.

I think you re at least 4-6 months short of when you would really get a gun back

That is my idea of a perfect carry Colt….wow
This one came back just before Christmas. So it was 6 months. Bob Reeves is great, price was reasonable.

Possibly, a lot of people are saying about that long for recent work, but some are saying much more. I'm not willing to give my #BottomBitch up for 9+months for this work just for the cache of being able to say Nighthawk did it. Not when I can get it back in a matter of 2-3 months from indy smiths who's work is arguably equal, near-equal, or possibly even superior depending on who you ask...
I had them do a make over on a Kimber Raptor. It was a couple of years ago and it took a few months, and I found their prices quite reasonable for the amount of work done. It was well worth the wait, the pistol came out amazing, if you closed your eyes you couldn't tell it wasn't a 100% Nighthawk. Had I not sent it to Bob, the gun would have sat in my safe and never been shot after the initial range day. After shooting mostly Hawks, the Kimber was a POS in comparison. It came back w/ a new trigger (not reworking my old one, nor a drop in), and it was now as accurate as my other Hawks.

In summary, the wait was well worth it. If I had to do it over again and they said 12 months, I still would have sent it in. Good luck...

In my case, the pistol in question gets shot every weekend, and sometimes carried during the week. I will miss it every day it's gone....
