I have enjoyed my time here, and realize this post may end it. I’m not a troll. I own more handguns, shotguns, long guns and ARs than I can count. I also own an SBR. I have dealt with and personally met members here. I have lost a family member today in Nashville, a child. Is there no middle ground?

Sorry doesen't cut it but I am incredibly sorry to hear of your loss. I can't speak for everyone but I think most of us are reasonable and level headed. That said what's the middle ground. Nobody here wants to see a child killed, what's the answer?

For what it's worth, I hope you don't go. I think we all want these horrible things to stop, and I think some, if not a lot of us have ideas on how we can tackle these things. And I think we as gun owners have been too silent for too long. I'm happy to talk about my ideas when the time is right -- and I'll leave it up to you to decide when that is.

Until then, I'm heartbroken for you.

Terrible to hear and I am so sorry for your loss.

I hope that such a post would not ruin your time here. This is a significant issue that needs to be addressed, I just don’t think anyone has a good answer on how to. No child should be scared to go to school in our country and frankly I would t blame them for being scared in this current environment. It’s something I never had to deal with and I don’t consider myself that old.

Unfortunately the easiest thing for politicians to do is pass some feel good “gun control” legislation that doesnt do anything to prevent future occurences, it just calms their constituents for the time being. They are too scared and/or lazy to dive into the real root cause of these issues, primarily bc no political leader wants to deal with the mental illness issues our country is facing.

We saw this first hand here in CT when that sicko took far too many very young angels from us. The subsequent legislation IMO did nothing to prevent a future occurrence and has made it an absolute nightmare to be a law abiding gun owner.

We truly need great thinkers that are center balanced to engineer solutions. Unfortunately I fear that is far away. In the meantime IMO we need to hold people accountable. If these mentally unstable people are being supported by their parents and knowingly allowing them access to firearms, they need to be tried for the crimes committed by their mentally unstable kids. In the CT incident the mother fortunately got what she deserved but the dad was living elsewhere and continued to have a nice life in finance at GE, from my understanding. Meanwhile the sued the gun manufacturers but not the dad. Accountability needs to be implemented asap

Pepe,

I'm sorry for your loss and hope this does not create anything but a productive discussion.

I would respectfully ask these questions in return: What do you consider middle ground? What further restriction would keep a mentally deranged criminal from breaking another rule/law/regulation?

How was the gunman stopped?

Does the specific caliber that killed someone matter?

Would the loss be easier if the gunman used a low capacity handgun vs a rifle?

Evil people will use whatever is available to them. This murderer was sick and chose to go after children... there is a special place in Hell for that one

My heart breaks for the people and families impacted by this.

I know you mean well, but if you want to have this discussion, let's do it on a different thread. OP is going through something that most of us can't imagine. I know that the instinct is to go on the defensive, but this isn't the right place to have that talk.

I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine the heart ache you must feel now. We can discuss “middle ground “ at a later date but laws have never stopped murderers.

The OP asked the question.

I wouldn't have said anything but express my sympathy but his only question was - is there no middle ground?

Please re-red his post.
Is there no middle ground?
As the father of a child in a small private Christian School, I think about this possibility daily. I pulled over to collect my thoughts when I heard this on fox this morning... it's nothing short of horrific.

Your child or the child of someone in your family?
Either way words cannot ease that and you have my deepest condolences. My sons best friend was murdered violently at age 11 a few years ago. He was our neighbors grandson and in my home daily. I know what being that close to a situation involving a child feels like.

As long as your idea of middle ground has absolutely zero to do with guns I’ll listen.
