I have enjoyed my time here, and realize this post may end it. I’m not a troll. I own more handguns, shotguns, long guns and ARs than I can count. I also own an SBR. I have dealt with and personally met members here. I have lost a family member today in Nashville, a child. Is there no middle ground?

Let the spin begin.
Told ya…

Not even a full day and these people are already blaming everyone else and their beliefs instead of the shooter.

Wrong! Get your facts straight. She was she, who wanted to be a he.
Yes, I was already corrected by @7.62, but there's so many fruitcakes it's hard to tell anymore.

The second wasn’t written because we need to be worried about a deer uprising. Shall not be infringed. That’s it, full stop. I’m all for mental health care reform and that some people shouldn’t necessarily have all their rights. Like, if you want to chop off your junk, no guns for you, and how about no voting either.
Now I'm all for some second amendment, but I do not think average joe (joella) should be able to walk in a shop and walk out with a machine gun in 10 minutes. I can't get fully behind that, LoL.
What pawns we are; arguing amongst ourselves, calling each other names, debating whether an AR 15 is more effective than a hammer, that the Republicans are better than the Democrats in protecting our children and not understanding they are the same; both put loosing votes over loosing children. That, in this case, trans people should be deigned their 2nd Amendment right. Yesterday or the day before many of us were defending an idiot who shot another idiot 10 times for punching him in the face.

It's a pity the NRA lost its way back in the 1970s, its original manifestation as a well-respected teaching & sporting organization could have gone a long way in helping our country and its leaders find a middle ground. But, alas, that dream like opportunity was squandered for mammon decades ago.

Do you folks realize that we have had 13 school shootings in the 13 weeks that makes up 2023 so far.

As long as we have weak leaders this chaos will prevail,

No problem, nothing to apologize about. I didn't take it that way. I wasn't trying to be snippy either.
I saw the humor in your post.

Where is this magic spot where I can get a "machine gun" in 10 minutes?

Sorry for your loss. These shootings need to stop.
As long as your idea of middle ground has absolutely zero to do with guns I’ll listen.
What?! Whatever the "middle ground" ends up being it most certainly has a lot to do with firearms and stopping these people from buying them & then shooting up a mall or school, etc.

We need something done w/the background check system, we need to do real work on jailing the FFL holders that knowingly sell to folks that they should not, we need a huge amount of work done to our mental healthcare system in this country & much more...

People also need to stop arguing nonsense just because of a political party affiliation. We are better working together, not against each other over nonsense.

LoL, my point exactly. There is not. I was just pointing out a little personal opposition to the "Full Stop Shall Not Be Infringed" opinion.

You can throw those quotiation marks out the damn window for the record. I've got more NFA items than I have fingers and toes. I'm fully aware of what a "Machine gun" is.

Can you name an FFL or link an article where they sold to ‘someone they should not’? What does that even mean? They pass a BC they get the gun. What else is an FFL supposed to do? People like the one who did this yesterday should be flagged in NICS for having a mental disorder and denied during the BC. Then the FFL can say ‘sorry’. Sure I’d agree to that. We do need to do more to stop certain types from buying guns. I agree. What we don’t need to do is ban anything from the rest of us.
But what else specifically are you talking about? I heard the same things everyone else says with no substance.

I got a look at the weapons this shooter had on her. The one she is holding as she moves through the school is a Kel-Tec 9mm carbine set up for Glock mags. She also had a handgun and an AR variant, but it is unclear if she used anything but the Kel-Tec she was holding in the surveillance video, other than the pistol to suicide herself.

I don't need to link an article to have common sense. You're naive if you think there are zero dealers out there allowing straw purchases or selling firearms to people they know full well should not have one whether It's because of their mental condition or something else.

Nowhere in my post did I say ban anything or stop people that should be allowed to own firearms.

I'm clearly saying the mental health system is a joke and needs to be fixed. I think that's where we start to start ending this. Obviously all these types of shooters are not getting their firearms illegally so clearly the system is broken.

It’s hard to have a rational discussion without talking about firearms and access of certain individuals. I think you hit the nail on the head. We can deflect and point to something that happened somewhere else with a knife or a drunk driver or something but realistically, we are having more of these types of shootings.

I’ve sworn to uphold the constitution more than once in my professional career, but I’ve got to be honest and say that I don’t think “shall not infringe” means mentally disturbed folks should have unfettered access to firearms.

If one side is so rabid as to say that we should register all firearms and ban assault weapons of war, and the other side takes the position that everybody should have guns and unfettered access you no matter if a felon, homicidal or mentally impaired we will never solve anything.

It’s probably going to take a lot more education, a lot more understanding and rational thought processes to ever accomplish anything.

Pepe, very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain.

I continue to believe it is a problem with mental illness, as I and every other gun owner I know cannot imagine killing anyone let alone children.

I think our culture has destigmatized mental illness to a degree that is completely unhealthy. While I think it's admirable for people to feel they should seek help when needed, mental illness seems to be an identity for many people today. It's no surprise that after the great majority of these shootings, the perpetrator is a very obviously disturbed person.

I have to submit fingerprints, a passport photo and go through a lengthy FBI background check when purchasing a SBR. But someone who is being treated for SERIOUS and dangerous mental illnesses like bi-polar, schitzophrenia, etc. is allowed to walk in and buy provided they haven't been involuntarily hospitalized. Meaning they could check out of the looney bin and buy an AR15 on their way home.

The Government has a database of guys like me, but not the mentally ill? I just think that is nuts.

I think Mas said it best its not the system causing these mass shootings. Its the media and one thing the shootings everywhere have in common. Gun Free Zone signs. These lunatics go to these areas. Why? Because they don't want to be shot by an armed citizen. No media glory and no legacy to be remembered. They want a swat response or multiple officer response. With that comes mass media coverage. The media will make sure they are remembered as the guy who shot up a Nashville school or el Paso sandy hook. What you don't hear about is the teacher in Ohio.

All that aside. My condolences go.out to the OP. No sorry can ever replace or begin to help your loss.

Sorry for your loss. My sister lives in the area and drove by the church as the shooting was happening, not knowing what was going on. I’m from the Nashville area also but live in Texas now. Talked to her last night and she told me one of the children was a co workers son.

I have no idea what the correct answer is but don’t think this person (POS killer) should have been able to buy any gun, criminal background check or not, from what I’ve heard and read so far. I’m 100% for being able to purchase guns of all types but not everyone should be able to buy a gun, that's my opinion. Saying that, the issues isn’t the guns, it’s the mental illness going on in this country that’s spreading like crazy. I won’t even try and go in to that issue right now.

I think the biggest problem with the background check system at the moment is the lack of ability to process "hold" checks. By default, if those holds aren't reviewed in 3 days (if memory serves) they're greenlit for sale. A protection like that makes sense; it prevents the FBI from just putting a background check on hold indefinitely. But the result is that last year, something like a million guns were sold from FFLs without a properly completed background check. That needs to be balanced better. Why can't FBI complete these checks in time? If they're so strapped for time and manpower, what are they doing that ranks higher on the priority list than reviewing background checks?

FFLs may be part of the problem, but so are police and gun thefts. Let's make it illegal to leave a gun in a car alone, even if the car is locked. If you're going into a place that prohibits guns, they must provide secure storage while you're on the premises. Prosecute unlawful gun sellers, whether police, FFL, or otherwise, for aiding and abetting crimes committed with the guns they sold. That'll get people who are just careless to tighten up their act real quick, but of course won't stop those hell-bent on profiteering no matter the cost.

Like my previous post said, I'm all on board with mental health improvement. Frankly I don't in theory dislike the idea of mental health screening prior to purchase, but I do see a few problems with that, not the least of which being activist psychologists and/or psychologists that are afraid of being sued, either by a would-be gun buyer or by a victim of a crime. I don't know how, or even if there is a way, to implement a mental health check system that wouldn't be easily subject to exploitation.

One thing I think we could do better at is taking a "yes and" approach to some propositions. For example: yes, red flag laws, and if someone abuses a red flag law's reporting system, they open themselves up to liability. That leaves the system in place for those that are truly in need for it while potentially dissuading the filing of fraudulent claims. (Please do not take this as an endorsement of red flag laws as they currently exist on my part; there are due process and takings concerns to be resolved there.) Or yes, safe storage laws, and the government will subsidize the purchase of robust and actually useful gun safes so every gun owner isn't stuck footing a multi-thousand dollar bill just to comply with the laws.

She was holding the AR pistol at one point. I saw one of the released surveillance videos; at timestamp 10:13 she was holding the AR; it then jumped forward to 10:18 and she had switched to the KelTec. One thing I've been wondering about is why these shooters tend to bring multiple rifles to a shooting. Uvalde, Highland Park, and Greenwood all involved shooters carrying multiple rifles. To me, it reeks of copycatting.
