New Springfield Ronin EMP, size surprise

I went and picked up a 4" Springfield Ronin that I had ordered. I was super excited about it, and when I opened the box to check it out before completing the forms, I was surprised at its size. It is bigger than expected. I am not disappointed, because I didn't want a super small 1911. My expectations were that it would be bigger than a 928 or a Micro 9, but it's much larger. The first photo shows it beside my DW Vbob commander, and the second photo shows it sitting on top. For all intents and purposes, the only real size difference is the 1/4" shorter slide/barrel. Even the grip is very similar.

How does it shoot? Are you carrying this or is it a range only gun?
I'm guessing you didn't get the height and length off their website and compare them to pistols you have. I think there are some online tools that let you compare pistols sizes to each other.

There are, but I didn't utilize them.

I won't get to my range for a few days, so I haven't shot it yet. I'll carry it.
Yep, it's a Commander sized 9mm, but I really like mine.
That's correct you have the commander but rather than the typical 4.25 slide length it's a 4" which l find preferable. It had the full sized grip and your other option would have been the 3" which is the officers size with the smaller grip, which I'd suggest trying before buying, the officers doesn't fit my hand and yours might not either.
Aside from their conscious choice to shorten the barrel just a smidge, all the other dimension changes in the EMP are due to re-tooling everything around the 9mm cartridge (which is a bit shorter than the 45).

First and most apparent, take a look at any standard 9mm 1911 you might have-note the spacer at the back of the magazine (again cuz the 9mm is a shorter round that the 45). All 9mm mags -officer or full size-have this. Then take a look at your EMP magazine (either 3” or 4” EMP-I have both, btw). Note that it does not have the spacer. The EMP Mag redesign eliminates the spacer by reducing the front to back dimension of the magazine…this, coincidentally is the same dimension that the grip circumference is reduced-also necessitating a different trigger (the trigger bow is shorter) and a different firing pin (also that little bit shorter). Same with the extractor (I’m pretty sure). I believe the breech dimensions are just that smidge smaller as well.

It seems odd to look at that magazine spacer and its dimension at the back of your regular 9mm 1911 mag and translate that to all of the dimension changes in the EMP…the EMP just feels even smaller than just that. But there ya go-small dimension changes can result in a very different hand feel.

I don't have another 1911 in 9; I've compared the grip to my DW 45's.
I can tell the subtle size differences- they are there. But, They aren't extreme and it isn't micro. Again, while surprised, I'm not unhappy with it. I do appreciate the smaller grip on a commander size gun.

Oh, yeah-me too. I like it a lot-and I have pretty large hands.
One thing for sure is it looks nice 👍
You're right. The fit and finish are great. It's tight, the trigger is awesome, and I am super happy with it. I hope to get out to the range this afternoon.

Let us know how the range sessions go 👍
