Since my Dan Wesson has the dreaded "horny safety," I have decided to replace it and (hopefully) save the webbing between my thumb and index finger. So far, I have narrowed my options to the following models from Wilson Combat. I am already leaning toward one over the other, but I also wanted to see what you guys think.

This is strictly a range gun, so holstering/concealing/etc are of no concern to me.

I just changed the safety on one of my DW Guardians to the EB Tactical Extended Safety. It has an even lower profile than the bulletproof.

Do you mean keep the existing safety? My issue is that it needs to be de-horned, and I'd prefer to keep the stock part in case a future buyer (if I ever decide to sell) wants the original.

I was being a bit of a smart ass. I have the bulletproof on one of my guns & it works great. I have the stock EGW on my Specialist, as well as 2 other 1911s. I very much prefer the EGW. None of mine have issues with horns. I would not be happy if they did. As far as appearances, I think the Wilson Wide Comp safety matches the lines of the slide stop better than the bulletproof. The Bulletproof is much more rounded off. not that it effects function, but just something to think about... Best of luck!

The thumb safety on my DW PM9 is nice and smooth - no sharp edges - so this does not appear to be a universal problem. If I were you I would dehorn the factory safety. Is it covered in Duty Treat? If so, after working on it just send it back to DW and have them treat it again. This way you will have a factory safety with the factory finish shaped just the way you like it.

do you all feel that a larger paddle gets depressed harder?

I have very large hands and use a strong grip. It does not help with the sharp edge inside lug of the thumb safety.

I did this with a large paddle EGW where it peened some metal in and out. I actually caught myself pressing down hard on the thumb safety.

I went back to the factory set up (ambi) but the weak connection between the two sides are loosening up. Part of me wants to reduce my paddle width on the EGW and go back to that one.

anyone do this to a frame?

That is a common area to peen with any thumb safety. @pistolwretch has posted pictures adding material to the thumb safety in the area that contacts he frame window and re shaping to have a smoother radius to not dig into the frame.
