I just purchased a new Leupold VX-5HD 3-18x44, and to my eyes, the top vertical crosshair line is slightly wider and off-center from the bottom vertical line.

Do you guys see the same thing?

Its hard to diagnose the problem from an image but it *appears* appears to be the way that you are describing. Try covering one of the stadia lines with your thumb (so only three are visible at one time) and then compare them. The problem you are describing seems to go away a little bit.

Just complete speculation on my part, since you don't seem to have listed the reticle type, but a thinner bottom stadia line may be intentional. Some reticle designs favor thick 12, 3, and 9 o'clock stadia to aid in quick acquisition, and a small or even a non-existent 6 o'clock stadia to avoid obscuring the mass of the target.

If it really is a defect, contact Leupold. Their customer service is pretty good

Are your turrets set to zero?

Yes, the turrets have not been moved. I picked up the scope out of the box, held it up to my eye, and thought "This doesn't look as good as my other scopes" (which are all less expensive).

I called them this morning, and they verified the serial number as authentic.

The tech said the wire for the firedot system runs through this line, which may explain the variation in thickness. Nonetheless, I can send the scope back to them for evaluation.

Yes, I agree, looks a little "off" to me even to my old eyes.
