Recommend me carry/duty quality 120mm 2011 10mm magazines…?

I’m pretty close to pulling the trigger on a JEM or Cheely frame and parts to build a carry-oriented 10mm compact… think “10mm VIP/C2”, except with more fireballs and BDE.

My hangup is mags. Who makes quality reliable 10mm VIP/120mm length magazines? Im having trouble pinning that down. I’m pretty sure “.40s&w” 2011 mags are usable too.

I just don’t want to dump $2k+ into a build only to have to be constantly fighting magazines … I’d rather build a 10mm commander or CCO single stack 1911 instead of going to a full length grip on the 2011.

If you’re building a 10mm CCO, I’d recommend this route:

Great price for a grip and you can put your life on infinity’s mags.

I was thinking something more along the lines of a round butt Extreme Shooters VIP Tactical grip ($300) or picking up a used C2 take-off grip… but wow… that SV carry grip is hot sh!t. It’s actually a “officer” grip length. The C2/120mm grip lengths are much closer to a flush fit government frame. But $1000 for a steel grip and two 10-round mags is 🤮.

I hate you for even showing me that… because now in the end I know I’m going to end up getting it.

But hey, it comes with the mainspring housing, sear spring, grip pins, trigger and mag release … so that’s nice, right?

Not just any grip. A metal SV grip.
They were one of the 1st to offer a quality metal grip. Their parts are second to none.
In all fairness, I remember quite a few threads on Enos forums about SV aluminum grips cracking on major guns. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of a steel one cracking, but I would have selected steel regardless because melonite beats the pants off of anodized/cerakote aluminum.
Apologies for this distraction, but do the 40 S&w mags hold 10mm rounds and feed them reliably? Thanks!

They should, Some 40 mags use spacers, but most don’t. If the mag does have a spacer that’s removable then yes it will feed 10mm.

I never heard of SVI grips failing. The STI aluminum grips were notorious for it though. They were only good for minor loads.

Late to the party on this one.
The STI aluminum grips were way too thin and prone to crack.

Most aluminum grips should not be used on major power factor ammo as they can and probably eventually fail it may be 500 or it may be 50,000 rounds. There are some grips made with a higher grade alloy like L-10 machine used to make (not sure if they’re still around) that was more durable. Steel grips are generally recommended for any metal grip on a gun shooting over standard power 9mm rounds.
“Major Power factor ammo” LOL.
Good 10mm is like 230+ PF … no aluminum grip can probably deal with that long term.

I found a good deal on a Chen SI Officer Magwell in the classifieds, so this build is going to be an officer 1911.

Hot 10mm out of an officer frame 1911?
That does not sound like a fun gun to shoot at the range. Will definitely stop a two-legged animal. But I’m not seeing a lot of range time with that.
I fired 90 rounds of SD equivalent 10mm in one day. The web of my strong hand was sore for two days. And that was out of a full-size 2011. YMMV

How about a 10mm commander sized 2011 with a polymer grip?

I shot an USPSA or IDPA match with a G29 full of Buffalo Bore once. My palm had a bruise. Haha.

People underestimate the usefulness of the ability to flex without breaking (plastic)and/or significant separation between yield and ultimate strength (steel).

aluminum is light, but it tend s to just crack when the goin go gets tough.

I have at least 4 2011 10mm’s that I can think of off hand that shoot quite well with the plastic grips. Strength and flexibility in one. People underestimate the utility of the glass filled polymer grips.

@_Dan_ depends.... I had older MBX 40 mags and they had issues....simple spring adjustment worked....

I have a STI Perfect 10 that has been worked over by a couple smiths and finished by nighthawk. It has a 5 chamber, 7 port comp on it.

A Thoroughbred Custom commander 4.25” barrel.

A STI Nitro 10.

Innovative Custom Gunworks ported island barrel with a comp.

An old 6” competition gun previously in .40 reamed out to 10mm.

I’d have to really dig through the safes to see what else I have. I’ve sold a few off as I don’t shoot 10mm much unless it’s a hunting sidearm or driving around looking for hogs (and I rarely have time to hunt anymore).
