So, Let me say that I am being cheap here and trying to not spend any additional money right now.

Due to the low cost of 9mm I have not been reloading it. However, I have the components and circumstances are driving me to start doing so.

I have Dillon 38 Super dies for my 550 press and I am wondering if it would be possible to load 9mm with my 38 Super dies. Seems like I could just shorten up on the throw and it should work.

    Has anyone tried this?

Once I am back to work I will get a proper set of 9mm dies, but for now I am trying to make out with what I have if I can. The Dillon conversion plate is 9mm/38 Super. However, I assume that with the longer shell where I might run into issue would be for crimping.

Thoughts? Maybe I could just buy a crimping die...?

I doubt case tension would be adequate; Super is straight walled case, 9mm is tapered case.
Likely eff up more $'s worth of stuff than the cost of 9mm dies. :)

Good point, I forgot that 9mm has a slight taper.

Good advice from gaijin. Get the 9mm dies.

I don't see it working very well either..../ everyone has a budget - but the cost of the die even in the short term, a year or so, hopefully will pay for itself in your savings.

There is a little thrift shore down the street that just had a bunch of reloading stuff dropped off. Some how I am the go to guy for all things firearms or tech related.....I will check and see what they have and might get lucky and run across a set of dies.

They pretty much price things way below what they are worth and then the GF get 50% off that.

Will only Dillon Dies work in a Dillon press?

Only the Square Deal B takes proprietary dies.
All other Dillon presses (550, 650, and 1050) take standard dies.

I have tried to use my RCBS dies in the in my 550. They work but are not ideal. Personally, for high volume I prefer the Dillon dies.

    RatBike,

I checked today....No Dies of any brand or caliber.....Mostly shot shell cup and other componets but I will have the GF keep an eye out.

I will have the GF keep an eye out none the less....Pretty amazing what some people will just get rid of when they are done with it or some family member passes awat.

Guy across the street his father was all set up for reloading. After he past away the other brother just tossed all the relaoding stuff in the roll off dumpster they had delivered.....presses, the benches and everything gone.

No worries. With these last two gun sales I ordered a set of 9mm Dillon Dies today, so I am good.

Now, to get a job so I can get me a 38 Super!
