Got a call from a friend who purchased a Remington 700 LTR. I'm not a rifle guy but wanted to put this out for some advice as to your choices for a scope for the Remington. He would appreciate any suggestions on the best choice and where to get 'em. Thanks...................

Depends how much he wants to spend.

I love my Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 amazing light collection and crystal clear glass. I've used nikons that are supposed to be the same level and there is no comparison. The Leupold wins hands down.

If he got the gun in .308 and wants to shoot past 350-400yds he needs to think of something of at least 16 power top end. If he wants to shoot past 600 he needs to move up in power. Have him check out the vorteck line of scopes if money is an issue if not then the sky is the limit. Even in .223 if he is going to shoot praire dogs, crows and other small targets 16 power or higher will come in handy and keep him from buying another scope later on. If he's gonna hunt yotes and just plink then something in the 3x9 or Sams recomendation wiil be suitable.

Leupold MK4 or Vortex Viper in FFP would be best for the money, but if you want to go all out, there are Nightforce, US Optics & S&B, etc...

It depends what is the budget & what is the use...

Nice setup Don! What do you guys think about the Howa brand in a 308?

haven't shot a Howa, but for the $ I hear they are nice. Howa has built rifles for Weatherby, Mossberg and I think S&W. the 1500's that I've played with felt really nice.

I was thinking about a Weatherby sporter, Howa or Browning x-bolt in a 308, just something to have fun with at the range. That looks like a pretty damm nice scope for the money. I need a nice rifle, let me know your guys opinions on these, if you have any. I do like the look of the good old wood stock, but i also like the tactical look. I just want something nice to put a scope on and bi-pod and start shooting.

    Thanks

Remington has a $40 rebate on 700 SPS's right now, so you can get a 700 SPS tactical for ~$479 (after rebate)

eh...I've been using the 10x40 Bushnell Elite Tactical scopes for a while now. They are very nice for the money. I've had Nightforce, Burris, Bushnell, Leupold, etc... up next for my custom build is going to be a Sightron Siii 6-24x50. I also have an LTR in .223 coming to me that I'll post pics of when it is all put together. I think it is going to get a Sightron Siii also...unless something else comes up that is as good of a value in 30mm...

But then I've also done a fair bit of 600+ yard shooting with a 6 and 10 power scope... Know thy rifle... ;)
