Washington state has passed new, more restrictive, gun laws. Sheriffs in many rural counties have responded by publicly refusing to enforce these new laws on the basis that they are unconstitutional and violate the rights of the citizens they are sworn to protect.

Sheriffs have a high degree of autonomy when it comes to deciding which laws to enforce and the circumstances under which to enforce them.

Some are attempting to reframe the actions of these Sheriffs as being tied to alt-right and white supremacist movements, others are spinning this as being the result of strong gun lobbying.
