Berettas have always been iconic being born in 1986. I’m a GWOT Army vet so we ran M9s which were hot garbage BUT ergos are great and I think now there have been enough new models and updates to justify one.

Which models are geared towards carry/duty and not competition?

Single action only would be cool but I’m ok with DA/SA. I was thinking about an M9A4 but what others should I consider? Which Langdon Tacticals? Which Wilson’s or just straight Beretta?

Which ones do I stay away from?

Which one do you want? All of them. Which one should you get? :) Nah, I have no idea but interested to read the responses.

Get an optic ready Langdon Tactical Elite LTT straight from the website. Even if you don’t use an optic, it’ll give you the option and aid in resale value, should that time come. I had a compact version and I deeply regret selling it. I regret selling it so much that I’m looking to buy a centurion.

Only the big steel framed 92Xis are true dedicated compeition guns. Even the new Squalos and such can be used as defensive guns pretty reasonably.

If you just want to relive the .mil days, a standard m9 or 92fs will get you through it. The 92Xs are pretty good with lots of modern touches, but the factory Beretta optics system kinda sucks. the M9A4 is basically a 92X in a different color, a threaded barrel, and some other little things.

If you want a really up to date Beretta that can hold up to today's modern guns, the 92 Elite LTTs are the heat. I would encourage you to order directly from LTT, and option the trigger job and the RDO cut. If you want to add stuff like NP3 coating or night sights that's up to you. But a spec'd out 92 Elite with a dot is the REAL poor mans 2011, shoots 90% as well, far easier to work on, and cheap parts and magazines.

Can't speak on the Wilsons, since no red dot cut put them out of my consideration. The few I've handled had grat triggers.

Right now the LTT guns are the best value. I have both and prefer shooting the Centurion.

The fullsize or the Centurion with the trigger job is $1008 Beretta 92 Elite LTT Full-Size

I’ve owned 2 ltt’s. One base level, one with all the ltt options. I sold both. It’s a fine gun. But I prefer the Wilson more.

I own the m9a4. I like it. The army beretta that never was. If you search you can find nib $900

Their competition model is also fantastic.

If you collect guns owning a 92 is a must . The ltt’s are really cheap right now. If you go that route make sure it’s got the full ltt trigger. The base model is meh.

The thicker frame Wilson to me is my kinda sexy

For carry/duty, go with a Centurion model.

The M9A4 Centurion is great, but currently only comes in that brown color. If you can find a 92X Centurion, it will be very similar but in black.

Some people like the new GTS model, which has a frame-mounted decocker instead of the slide-mounted style. Personally, I find the frame mounted decocker (and safety on the SAO models, for that matter) to be uncomfortable.

Can’t go wrong with the LTT! Especially at their recent-ish price decreases, it’s a pretty good value. I think the M9A4 gets you most of the way there, their new guns are really pretty good, but I absolutely love the classic M9A1 style frame. This thing feels phenomenal, for my hand at least.

I will second the above, I do also love and perhaps prefer the Wilson 92G Centurion, but you’ll have to invest more overall if you want to send it out for an RDO cut. My buddy has one, with the action tune, and then RDO cut and porting by LTT and it’s one of my favorite guns.

The night itself is a wonderful pistol. However, most in the military possession, where extremely neglected, had wore out springs and magazines.

Love the 92 and have owned several. There are many models, each of them will serve you well, it’s 6 one way and half a dozen the other. I have never owned LTT but I’m quite sure they’re amazing. I have owned and will always recommend a Wilson, they’re perfect.

If there’s a single option that I would consider, make sure the thing is a “G” model or “decocker only” model. That means there’s no safety mechanism, the safety lever on the slide only decocks the hammer. That’s the only thing I’d make sure to get, all the beretta 92 models are great. But +1 for Wilson or if you want to be OG gangster go with the 92G-SD if you can find one

I have the WC 92G Brigadier with the trigger job and it is a very nice gun. Unfortunately, it’s not red dot ready.

My wife really likes the 92FS Compact and I sent it for a complete WC build. It shoots very well and even better than my 92G, but cost much more.

92X RDO compact. Change the front sight to an Ameriglow night sight, drop in a 13 pound mainspring, change the trigger to an all steel one, get a steel guide rod, order up some Mec Gar 15 round compact magazines, it'll 90% match anything coming from Langdon for $500 less. I say that as someone who had an LTT 92.

If you can find one of these I highly recommend it. Wilson Combat 92G Vertec Brigadier Tac. These were discontinued in 2023.

I pulled the trigger on a 92XI SAO recently after wanting a Beretta for more than thirty years. After the $75 factory rebate arrives, I'll have spend only $500 on it. That's cheap enough that it'll be a project gun for me. I'd like to try and slick it up myself.

I don't especially care for the frame-mounted safety, but I never especially cared from the slide-mounted system either.

I am super happy with the Beretta 92X Centurion (full sized frame, shorter barrel), it's DA/SA with decocker only.

Nothing needs to be done to it, but it has the Extreme S trigger, Wilson mag guide, and G10 grips now. It's a great pistol, easy to carry, easy to shoot.

It wasn't available at the time, but the 92X GTS (DA/SA with frame safety) looks very interesting. The "rounded" slide is easy to conceal and the GTS doesn't have the ugly safety/decocker sticking out on the right side.

I wouldn't mind stumbling on a 96 Border Marshal or a 96D Brigadier. It was a issue gun years ago...

Modifying my prior recommendation, when I checked down the bore of my brand new Langdon, this is the barrel I got. Haven’t heard anything from their customer service yet, so I’ll withhold judgement and say maybe it was a fluke that slipped through QC, but does hinder my full recommendation until rectified:
