The more things change, the more things stay the same…..Rogers content

The more things change, the more things stay the same. Just as I started downsizing, an opportunity came along that took a hold of me like a typical Addict.

I didn’t think I would ever own another one, I’ve had a couple. An opportunity came to acquire a partial Rogers Precision Colt. I made the deal and here are my thoughts following the “build specs”. Keep in mind, I had literally nothing to do with his build, I was just able to close a deal with the previous owner.

-Ream and polish chamber, throat barrel, optimize feed ramp
-EGW match barrel bushing, Thick flange
-Flush cut and match crown muzzle
-French borders
-Front cocking serrations
-Ball cuts
-Rogers’ Whiteball front sight, Full width, blended
-Rogers' Tier One' rear sight, .140" square notch.
-Modify ejection port
-Harrison extractor, Tuned
-Harrison trigger, Medium, Internally lightened
-Re-work factory hammer, Bob, Lighten
-Trigger job, 3 3/4 lbs
-Rework TS for positive detents & no overtravel
-Soften all grip safety edges & surrounding area
-Carry bevel package, Light
-High cut and golfball front strap
-Chen MSH, Golfballed Round butt
-Bevel magazine well, Light
-Wolff springs
-VZ golfball grips, Modified
-Parkerize all steel parts
-Cerakote sights, trigger, grips

EXTRA WORK DONE BY CHUCK AFTER THE PICTURED BUILD SHEET.

-Re-machine ejector slot
-Fabricate custom ejector
-Extra Wilson 'Bulletproof' extractor. Tuned
-Rogers' golfballed semi-flat trigger, Medium
-Trigger work
-Small radius EGW firing pin stop
-EGW disconnector
-Wolff recoil spring
-Rogers' logo grips (Nice Grips)

-Reliability work

So yes, quite a bit of work done to a Colt base. It is not a full build. It still has a Colt barrel. Lockup seems really good. Frame the side fit is good no perceivable play. Trigger is great. Thumb safety is outstanding. Love the ball cuts. Forward serrations are perfect. Sights are phenomenal. Some may just notice the external machining, like the golf balls. Many don’t realize there is always quite a bit more that goes into a Rogers gun than just exterior machining and texturing. The builder is not just a talented machinist, gunsmith, and a visionary. He possesses the knowledge and experience to correct or perfect, internal workings of the platform, this may be the greatest asset.

For those who have never handled a Rogers’ golf-balled gun I can say this. The texture, while it looks very menacing, and abrasive, it’s really not. It is not a texture that many would not want rubbing on bare skin all day, however, it isn’t a blood letter. Does provide an extremely good purchase on the pistol. The grip will not be compromised by sweat, rain, or even blood. Also, surprisingly, the grip texture does not snag clothing, even the modern sport knits.

Handling a Rogers’ golf-balled gun is indeed a sensory experience. The eyes have as big of a part in the experience as the hands do. Addicts are drawn in visually. Once the hook is set, the hands, muscle and skeletal structure join in the experience.

I’ll get more pics up later, here are to builder pics that were included with the gun, much better than my single pic.

That’s a really cool build. I have been able to handle a few a pieces of Chuck’s work. Some in the white and some finished. The amount of work he puts in to “just” finishing the golf balling the way he likes versus off the machine is outstanding. It is really something you can feel. Handling one of his builds with your eyes closed you can tell who the builder is.

essentially it started as a colt parts gun ;)

Chuck Rogers custom built a special toy from the parts you gave him+ many more.

great pick up--congrats on capturing this gem-you win the internet for today
I didn’t have it built, I didn’t buy it from Chuck, I made a deal for it from a recent listing here.

Now this one made me do a double take!
Congratulations on a fine 1911. I agree with you on how a Rogers has its own feel, and it goes well beyond the balls. They are just shaped extremely well for a person’s hand.
Congrats, that’s a fine Colt.

Not sure what it is, but Chuck guns are just smoother than many. So much talent, so much knowledge.
I’m blessed to get the opportunity to own another.

Saw that one, glad it went to a good home. Congrats, it's a beautiful gat.
Great find, love it! (y) (y)
Nice write up. I look forward to shooting 9ne at the addict shoot. I enjoyed the sensory thoughts on this as well. The relaxed atmosphere of a den and gun in hand is one thing, but a relaxed quiet solo range day really lets one soak up the experience of the co experienced play of form and function.

I hope likely heJJ to make it. You can shoot it.

Chicken Little approves of this very much. I mean that. We just spent several minutes going over this and discussing why your gun is better than my carry Colt! We've never had a Rogers, we've never had a Yost, etc. and that list is long. We've got KGB guns lined up, but if I could pick up one of the "Greats" or have one built for the sake of truly carrying as an EDC, what you have there is something upon "Perfect". I have the utmost respect for Mr. Rogers as a man and a gunsmith and that is spectacular. Congratulations. That is wonderful and we are truly very happy for you.

Chicken Little’s approval is HUGE!
Thank you so much.

KGB build will be great, details?

One is a '77 9mm Colt Government Model and the other a '74 .45 Government. The 9mm has already had work done to it and will end up something like a Pachmayr Combat Special. The '74 will have a square trigger guard and quite frankly, the rest is up to Karl.
