The GI and Novak rear sight cuts are very different. There are many imitators of both cuts, most of which are not very close. On Novak's website, they have a page talking about their imitators, the Novak-type sights with a Novak-type cut, which frequently is a good bit different.
I bought a Tisas 1911 slide with what was supposed to be a GI cut rear sight. I wanted to replace the rear. I bought two different replacement rear sights that were supposed to fit a GI cut, and both were a good bit thicker. The explanation I have read from one of the suppliers is that GI rear sight cuts are commonly out of spec on the large side, whether from wear or abuse.
I also bought a Tisas stainless slide with a fixed Novak-type rear sight. On this slide, I wanted to replace the fixed Novak-type rear sight with a fully adjustable LPA Novak-type rear. There is a YouTube video which would lead you to believe that the original rear is easily driven out, and the other easily driven in. Nothing could be further from the truth. After failing with an enormous pusher, I tried pushing after Kroil and heat, and I finally had to Dremel a cut through the dovetail slot before the original sight moved. It would have been very easy to damage the finish of the slide, if I had not taken elaborate actions to protect it. It took a good bit of file work to get the LPA Novak-type fully adjustable sight to fit in the cut.
