In the midst of a scurvy epidemic at his camp near Fort Hays, Kansas, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer humiliates several troopers by shaving half their heads and marching them around camp.

This punishment was for their leaving camp to buy canned fruit, despite not missing any duties or roll calls and returning within forty-five minutes.

editorial: The Seventh cavalry troopers didn't call him Iron Butt just for his horsemanship.
