I teach shooting, so it's handy for me to be practically familiar with most platforms.
I also recognize that there may be a situation where I need to use someone else's gun.
So, I train with most of the more common platforms, even the ones that I distrust so much, I would rather carry a brick.

I only train with my carry guns. All of my guns are potential carry guns depending on circumstances.

Smith and Wesson model 41. Will never carry it.
But the trigger control training, the working out a flinch training, is very very real and greatly affects my carry gun performance. At times that gun is the exact prescription for my shooting issues.

Personally, anything but casual plinking, and that has value as well, is simply practicing.

I mostly carry a Sig 938. Great carry gun, not so much for range time, although I do shoot a clip every time I go to the range. My range toys vary with the ammo supply but I hjave a Ruger Mark 4 with a Volquartsen trigger, that is just plain fun to shoot. I rarely go into the woods without my S & W moderl 63.

Does anyone train with pistols other than the ones they would carry? If I know I will never carry a particular gun I can't really get into training with it. Is there a reason you would train with a gun other than a carry pistol other than for fun? Is there a technical reason to do so?

Yes I train with all my guns. Shotguns, (2) Hanguns, (4) and even a few knives. I train with them all because if I don't at my age, my skill in using them will diminish. I enjoy shooting on the range and outdoors. But as fun as they are to shoot, I have guns as a means of self protection. Not knowing how to use them properly by training with them constantly, would be a terrible travesty. IMHO.

I shoot matches (uspsa, steel challenge, plate matches, bowling pin matches etc) with the guns I carry or travel with. except pocket 380s. Mostly 1911s and glocks that are mostly stock. So, I get real practice and stress test the guns. Nothing like a match to put the gun and your skills to the test!

Absolutely. I have doubles of a couple and other 1911's set up exactly like the ones I carry. No good reason to put extra thousands of rounds through proven carry guns for the sake of wear. I do shoot all the guns I carry but usually sub for a likeness for a class or weekend shoot.

I too, do this. Not with 1911s though.

I do entirely too little training......but I do frequently shoot a pile of different guns.

What can I say, I enjoy my trigger time.


1911s first & foremost...then strikers, DA/SA, bolt action rifles, ARs, sporting clays and lastly...very lastly....wheelguns.


I enjoy shooting. Plain and simple.



I typically hit the range for a run with 1-3 carry guns on a weekly basis......additional trips for the other fun.

Yes competency with any and all owned firerarms, all my pistols work, they get used.

Don't own a BBQ pistol don't own a play pistol

I shoot a variety of guns on a regular basis--most are not carry units. Mostly just range time and fun.
I have 3 carry guns that are very different, so I train/practice accordingly. 380, 9mm and 45.. it's going to be very different and you need to be proficient with each.

Define train? Put a box of rounds through? This is a hobby. The oddities are the fun of it. That's the point. Fun.
In regards to training to be proficient to carry as a side arm? I could be proficient enough to grab it in an emergency.
My carry guns get 70 percent of rounds through them. I maintain them. Confidence for me goes a long way.
