When buying an older production gun or something to keep and stare at, what are your non negotiable? Modifications, non original grips, round count, anything?

Heavy idiot scratch, any type of painted on finish (non factory) is a no go for me. Mods would be ok if they were done by a well known ‘smith.

Interesting to begin with, no modifications, original finish 95% or better. So called "idiot scratch" on a military pistol is just like holster wear, part of it's history.

Stainless S&W revolvers that have been polished-NO!!!!! I prefer to buy guns in original condition though improved sights-generally night version-are good. Other things for 1911s such as the thumb safety or mainspring housing swaps are cool if everything is good to go. Checkering can be a good addition if done properly.

Modifications to slide or frame. Eg. Holes, milled areas, cut & reweld.

Poorly done sight, what the last guy did, changes.
Found a real nice old Colt with the exception of a half milled in Millet sight.
Just deep enough that it couldn't be fixed by re milling it for a Bomar or LPA sight.
That was a no go for sure for me.

For me as a collector piece it needs to be 98-99% or better, box & paperwork included unless it's something very very very rare. All others I'd consider shooters.

Buy something all original and nice condition. That way, you can stare at it all day and never be disappointed. Down the road, should you ever decide to part with it, you can sell it to anyone who has the money without having to make excuses.

Over all it needs to be in functional, safe and decent shape. Damage to slides, frames or barrels are defiantly no go. Modifications need to be looked over carefully, dremel work is highly suspect.

I don't do modified except by my Smith or one I know and can verify the work done. For example, used customs only issue is some Smiths are not active or have passed.
