S&W Model 57

Ruger target, 50rds at 7yds. The low shots were the first ones. The rest were after I made my self slow down and focus
SR1911 CDR 7yds 230g 50rds by awp101, on Flickr

Model 57 target, 12 rds at 7yds. My first go 'round with the .41 Magnum and I can certainly see the attraction
Mod57 7yds 185g Hornady 12rds by awp101, on Flickr

Let's see who else has been burning powder recently!

Practice with my Boland race gun, post watching Dirty Harry 29-2 & my Springfield Pro

Boland as in Jim Boland??? He was just getting started in the early 80s and he built some really strange but pretty pistols. Bruce Grey was working with him early on. Bruce is now in Oregon.

I did explain in the post following. My contacts were giving me trouble after shooting for a while and still haven't dialed in some of the different sights on these pistols yet. My two Patriot commanders also give me fits, mostly because the rear notch isn't wide enough for my liking. I will shoot rested if I can't group with a new pistol. What fun/good is it to shoot off a rest, most every gun will out shoot 99% of us so shooting from a rest is just a band aid for bad habits.
Sorry DWdude, I missed that one. I'm currently fighting with fiber optics front sight and I hate it. Also I'm a flat trigger guy and this new one has curved. Different style of discipline for me until I change it. Heck with an ancient 1911A1 I can outshoot my recent 9mm LWC purchase. That bothers me! ;)

It's all good, these sights are frustrating me also. My new to me one that I posted above has me all over the place and has the same sights as my other PT-C. I like the challenge of trying to shoot the gun the way it comes from the factory so I can learn the nuances of the different sight pics. If I can't figure them out I will change them to a set that I know I can shoot.

I need to start doing more of the action pistol shoots. I suck in dynamic shooting.
Tonight I shot an old beat up 38 Super Space gun
We used to call them race guns. It's one of the reason SWPL split up in 1982.

Last 38 supers I shot were Mickey Fowlers. Love them, still love to have one, but I am not going to set up to load 38 super. Sorry I won't shoot an indoor match, I hate shooting indoors.

I can remember Boland first and second gas powered 1911s... whew!

I did digitize some of the original IPSC course book matches. if you remind me I think I can post them if I find the JPGs I turned them into. Then again you can practice simple things like the Bill Drill or the triple Bill Drill. It's good basics.

Ok first thing you want to do it get yourself the holster you want to use with mag pouches.

The way Mike Harries (SoCal practical shooting maven for years) started me, was to slowly but surely come from out of the holster and come into position and dry fire. I'm not joking when I say I was doing it for at least 10 minutes a day, everyday. I increased that to 15 in time.

Now the trick is, once your into position to break the sear, pause after the hammer falls. What you're doing it building muscle memory. It also allows you to watch the sights as you dry fire to see if you're doing something wrong in follow through. The first part is watching to see if you're doing something wrong with the trigger pull like, pushing it, pulling it, grniching it downwards, etc etc etc.

The second part (follow through) was taught to me by Mickey Fowler. As the hammer falls or just after it, if you move the pistol in any way, the shot won't hit where you intended. It's why a lot of the guys these days pin the trigger, which is where you squeeze the trigger and dhold it just enough so letting it go, won't move the barrel and affect the shot placement.

This is just you're starting point. And you do thise slowly at first. Speed comes with time, practice and building a basic skill set.

There's more, but digest this first.

Sweet knife. Not that I don’t like the Legend, but that Damascus blade is fine, and a great handle. You don’t run down to the shop and pick one of those up every day.
